More than 170 Jewish actors, writers and filmmakers have signed an open letter defending Mark Ruffalo after Paramount accused him of invoking antisemitic tropes. The signatories, including Joel Coen, Tony Kushner, Ilana Glazer and Hannah Einbinder, rejected the accusation as a “smear campaign,” arguing that criticism of corporate conduct, business ties and military contracts should not automatically be equated with antisemitism.

Portugal has enacted its controversial “burqa law,” introducing a nationwide ban on face-covering clothing in public spaces, including the niqab and burqa. The law, which comes into effect on September 23, carries fines ranging from €150 to €3,000. Critics argue that the measure disproportionately targets Muslim women who choose to wear full-face veils. The legislation includes several exceptions, including coverings worn for religious worship, health or professional reasons, protection from weather conditions, and certain artistic or entertainment purposes.
