From the Cellar: Millennium Riesling still going strong

To close down a busy few days of tasting with the VDP (an association of over 200 growers from all over Germany), Paul Caputo stopped in at Heimat in Frankfurt to raid one of the best German wine lists in the city. The mood called for bone-dry Riesling of Grand Cru quality, with plenty of miles on the clock.

"Summer in the UK has been an absolute washout. Some pleasant days in June gave way to weeks and weeks of brooding cloud cover and torrential rains. The net result is the cellar is overweight in quaffable white drinking wines. They were’t supposed to stay long, merely queued for processing, but in the absence of opportunities for garden hospitality I’ve ended up finding space for them in the racks."

Each week Paul Caputo will pick out three bottles from his cellar, a collection built up over the last 20 years in the wine trade. This first entry features a 2018 Susumaniello rosato from Salento, a 2016 Soave and 2013 Nosiola from the foothills of the Dolomites.

We are really pleased our little wine database has grown to boast 5000 wines. There is still a long way to go but it's a nice milestone to reach.

Some shots of the Vini Alois vineyards in Italy's southern region of Campania. We've just rated their excellent Casavecchia riserva and the elegant white wine from the Pallagrello Bianco grape. You can see the scores here. https://www.vinorandum.com/producer/alois

These are really exciting varieties and we can't wait to try some more examples.

📝 Fontanavecchia and the ageing potential of Falanghina Beneventana

🇮🇹 Falanghina is one of Southern Italy’s key white grape varieties, but has long been considered a poor relation to the likes of Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino. Paul Caputo looks at the Fontanavecchia estate’s age worthy wines and their ability to improve over time.
