How to Prepare Your Breasts Before Delivery So the Milk Will Flow Well
Many women worry that their breast milk won’t flow after birth. The good news is that your body naturally starts preparing during pregnancy but there are a few things you can do to support it.
✅ 1. Eat Well and Stay Hydrated
• Foods like pap, oats, millet, beans, fish, nuts, and leafy vegetables support breast milk production.
✅ 2. Gently Massage Your Breasts
From around 7 or 8 months of pregnancy, you can:
• Massage your breasts lightly in circular motions.
• This improves blood flow and helps open the milk ducts.
⚠️ Do not squeeze the ni**le to bring out milk before delivery just gentle massage around the breast.
✅ 3. Care for Your Ni***es
Sometimes ni**les are flat or inverted, which can make latching harder.
• Apply natural oils like olive oil, coconut oil, or shea butter to keep the skin soft.
• Avoid using harsh soaps that dry out the ni**le area.
✅ 4. Wear the Right Bra
• Use a comfortable, supportive maternity bra.
• Avoid tight bras that press on the breasts.
• Good support helps proper milk flow after birth.
✅ 5. Avoid Stress
Stress can block breast milk from flowing.
• Rest well.
• Practice deep breathing or light relaxation.
• Surround yourself with support and peace of mind.
✅ 6. Get Ready to Breastfeed Early
Once the baby is delivered:
• Put the baby to the breast within the first hour.
• Let the baby suck often even if milk hasn’t started flowing much.
• Sucking is what tells the body to produce more milk.
✅ 7. Know What’s Normal
• Colostrum (the first milk) is thick and yellowish it may look small in amount, but it’s powerful and enough for the baby.
• Full milk usually comes in after 2–5 days.
✅ 8. Avoid Things That Can Block Milk Flow
• Do not take breast-tightening medications or herbs unless approved by a doctor.
• Don’t bind or press the breasts with cloth.
