Honestly, I couldn’t pick a song from this album. From She to All by Myself, I felt like Green Day was singing about my life in the boring suburbs of NJ. If you want problematic suburbs, imagine hanging out with some kids one day. They ask your background thinking that your half white, when you tell them that no you are full black, they suddenly seem disinterested. My escape was the rock and loud sounds of bands that felt rejected. It was my life line.
Dookie is Green Day’s third studio album, but for a while I thought it was the first. I had heard a lot of their songs on the radio, and at the time just didn’t know the name of the band. When I went to a garage sale when I was about 15-16, someone was selling all their CDs for like a $1. I got The Offspring, Blink 182, No Doubt and countless others. The moment I hopped into the car, I started playing all the cds and my life changed. Every time I went to a garage sale now, I would look for cds, vinyls and cassettes. My collected of vinyls is at like 250 now, and cds are maybe 100. (Hipster claim: I started collecting vinyls before they were being sold in urban outfitters, just saying)
When I was allowed to drive I would carry a stack of CDs to my moms jeep and drive around just listening and playing music. I felt so cool, listening to grunge and pop punk music at the end of the emo eras. I felt a connection to all the angst, the feeling of being left out, talking about anxiety and experimenting with w**d. I just felt like the music came from someone who wanted to talk about themselves and not just be relateable. So here we are, Dookie - Green Day!
P.S. I keep getting my videos taken down, so I have to figure out how to make a playlist that everyone can access!!
