Perched dramatically on the shores of the Firth of Forth, Blackness Castle is one of Scotland’s most striking fortresses. 🏰

Dating back to the 15th century, the castle has had many lives — from royal residence to military stronghold and even a state prison. Its unusual shape stretching out towards the water gave it the nickname “The Ship That Never Sailed.” ⛵️

You may also recognise Blackness Castle from Outlander, Outlaw King and Mary Queen of Scots.

If you’re visiting from Edinburgh, I’d definitely combine it with Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. From Linlithgow, you can catch the F49 bus to Blackness, which takes around 15 minutes. The service is limited, with only a few buses on weekdays, so make sure you check the timetable before setting off.

Save this for your Scotland itinerary and send it to someone who loves discovering castles. 🏴

I’ve visited all 12 of these, and each one has something completely different to offer — from royal residences and medieval fortresses to castles surrounded by some seriously beautiful scenery.

🏰 Arundel Castle, West Sussex — Nearly 1,000 years of history and one of England’s most impressive castle settings.

🌹 Hever Castle, Kent — Best known as Anne Boleyn’s childhood home, with beautiful gardens and a lake.

🌿 Corfe Castle, Dorset — Atmospheric medieval ruins overlooking one of the prettiest villages in Dorset.

🌊 St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall — A castle sitting dramatically on a tidal island, reached by a causeway when the tide allows.

🏞️ Wray Castle, Lake District — A quirky Victorian Gothic castle surrounded by the scenery of Lake Windermere.

🏰 Chepstow Castle, Wales — One of Wales’ oldest surviving stone castles, dramatically positioned above the River Wye.

👑 Edinburgh Castle, Scotland — Scotland’s iconic fortress, perched on Castle Rock with incredible city views.

⚓ Blackness Castle, Scotland — A striking fortress on the Firth of Forth, famously nicknamed the “ship that never sailed.”
