In today’s piece, Sisanda Kubeka contemplates how the rise of fascism is sending people towards a specific, nationalistic religiosity.

Sisanda reflects further: “We often imagine fascism as a sudden, door-kicking takeover where our rights exist one day and are completely gone the next, but the reality is far more strategic. It doesn’t just arrive and demand consensus. Rather, it colonises the gaps left by our own disillusionment. Right now, multiple governments across the world are showing early signs of fascist decline, where the freedoms promised by democracy are slowly dissipating.

It is a five-act play of incremental surrender: our collective exhaustion creates fertile ground for exploitation in a process that relies entirely on the manufacture of a specific kind of mob mentality. For the virus to spread, it needs a host of blind spots, failures, and deliberate oversights. It feeds on the confusion and mistrust that keep us siloed.“

In today’s piece, Rav reminds us that fighting the far right is not new for our communities. The terrain has definitely shifted, but the principle of building meaningful cross-movement multiracial working class solidarity remains the same - and more urgent than ever.

He writes: “Divide and rule has always been the Empire’s most effective tool: turning communities against one another, cultivating fear and suspicion, depoliticising us and fragmenting people along racial, religious and economic lines. They want us exhausted enough to retreat into private life while they occupy public space uncontested – but as our history shows, every victory against fascism, racism and state violence has come when people refused isolation and chose solidarity instead.”

🎨 Kalakal | Illustrator who says: “A woman stands fiercely, surrounded by her community. The boot, which was about to step on them, is almost covered by the energy of the resisting crowd. A hand grabs it to stop its progression. None of them would be able to resist the march of fascism alone, but there’s strength in numbers.”

With the media platforming incendiary narratives and far right politicians, the pogrom in Belfast this week was predictable, writes editor Elia Ayoub in his latest piece. He speaks with Belfast writer Lee Hurley, who says “those in power have had years to sort it out, and have chosen, at best, to do nothing. Others choose regularly to make it worse.”

As Elia writes: “Hours before the worst violence in Belfast occurred, The World At One – BBC Radio 4’s long-running lunchtime news and current affairs radio programme – decided to read out Rupert Lowe’s posts at the start of their bulletin. This despite the fact that Lowe’s fascist party, Restore Britain, polls at about 3% today. Someone at the BBC made the decision to centre one of the most extreme figures in British politics at a time when racists were openly calling for blood.”

At shado, we firmly believe everyone has the right to have their voice heard. This workshop aims to clarify the steps involved in getting published, from developing story angles to approaching editors to structuring your paragraphs. shado’s senior editor
Erin Cobby will guide you through the basics, with no prior experience required. First-time writers are actively encouraged to attend.

Let’s get your stories out there.

The landscape of modern journalism is in need of meaningful change. We are living in a post-truth society, and with the rise of AI and the mass dismissal of fact-checkers, it’s more important than ever to equip media consumers with the skills to think critically and assess information.

At shado, we also believe that everyone has something valuable to say. In part, these trainings aim to demystify the journalistic process and to teach people who may not have had access in the past how to get their voices out there.

As such, we’re launching a set of free online workshops and training for those on the frontlines of social change across disciplines to question common practices in mainstream journalistic production and offer counter-techniques and approaches that support a liberated media ecosystem.

Ranging from pitching to reporting on protests to using social media as a documenting tool, these aim to support journalists who are deeply embedded in the causes they support and build reciprocal relationships with the communities they report on.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Back in April, attended a protest organised by – a group which formed in the wake of Girlguiding’s announcement last December that trans girls and young women were no longer allowed to join the organisation in the UK (a decision made as a result of growing legal pressure from billionaire-funded gender-critical groups such as S*x Matters following last year’s Supreme Court ruling). In today’s piece, Taran writes about the role of communal song in the group’s activism.

“In the weeks since the protest, I’ve found myself singing back many of these campfire-turned-protest songs, my mind ensnared by their catchy, memorable hooks and left contemplating their revolutionary message. Part of their effectiveness derives from the fact that the building blocks of what makes a great singalong tune for kids of all ages isn’t dissimilar from what makes a powerful protest chant or song: both need to be highly accessible, instantly memorable and clear in their message. Often there’s call-and-response, repeating phrases or melodies, and a strong sense of rhythm.”

🎨 who says: “This artwork shows a group of diverse people coming together to fight for trans rights and make their voices heard. They are marching together in line with the trans flag behind them to show unity. The people in the illustration are intentionally stylised to provide more personal interpretation, with the intention that many people will be able to look at these people and recognise parts of themselves in them. This piece is meant to show solidarity, trans joy and the power of community.”
