Using advanced remote control driving technology and dozens of specialist cameras and mannequins. Our production team and experts from Cranfield University Advanced Vehicle Engineering Centre will work with everyday vehicles and everyday drivers to create a full-scale, high-speed pile-up, to then investigate it in forensic detail.

This world-first experiment will attempt to reveal the answers to questions such as what actually happens second-by-second in a real-life motorway pile-up; how different drivers actually behave in this situation; how successful safety and next generation automated systems are at protecting drivers; and what types of vehicles protect drivers best

What really happens in a multi-vehicle pileup? Surprisingly little is known about the behavior of cars and drivers in uncontrolled, real-world accidents. In this two-part special, go behind the scenes as scientists design a first-of-its-kind experiment to test a large-scale crash. The plan is for eight drivers to drive eight different types of cars by remote control at 70 mph down a hazardous roadway. They only have one shot. Then, follow scientists, engineers, and accident investigators as they analyze a treasure trove of data – more than they’ve ever been able to work with before. See what they find, and discover insights about driver behavior and vehicle design that could save lives. (A two-part series premiering May 7 and May 14 at 9 pm on PBS.)

TONIGHT HISTORY 9PM
BRAND NEW SERIES PREMIERE:

Alderney, a peaceful idyll in the English Channel, a jewel of the British Crown, and home to one of the darkest chapters of Britain’s wartime history.

A period so horrifying, it has taken almost 80 years for the true extent of the atrocities to be revealed. Through two x 60-minute episodes, Hitler’s British Island will finally answer the questions that have haunted Britain for decades. What really happened when the N***s invaded the Channel Islands? How many did they murder on British soil, and why did no one face justice for their crimes?

Using cutting-edge technology, declassified wartime sources and buried government files, the series will shed light on the horrors that unfolded on Alderney during the Second World War, including reports of mass graves and shootings in cold blood. Heart-breaking testimonies from the families of those that suffered provide startling revelations into the scale of the brutality inflicted upon prisoners – many of them Jews – by the SS Death’s Head Unit.

Through painstaking research carried out by expert historians and investigative journalists, the films will also investigate the true fate of the perpetrators, exposing a series of deceptions and half-truths at the highest levels of the British government. Nearly a century after these horrifying war crimes, are we finally closer to finally finding out what truly happened on Hitler’s British Island?
