Japan may soon welcome more international students!

The Education Ministry is proposing changes that would let universities exceed enrolment limits by 5% to boost overseas recruitment - especially from G7 nations, India and Southeast Asia.

Only institutions with strong track records and good finances would qualify, and they’d need to submit detailed plans on how they’ll support these students.

This comes as Japan hosted a record 336,708 international students in 2024 but aims for 400,000 by 2033.

Our Story

StudyTravel Magazine started life in 1990 as Language Travel Gazette, a quarterly, black and white publication for language travel agents. It has since grown into a monthly magazine that is read by over 22,000 industry professional in 129 countries. The magazine provides news, industry statistics and articles on all of the sectors within study travel, including language, higher education, vocational, secondary school, work experience, accommodation, insurance, and much more. StudyTravel Alphe Conferences began in 1998 in London. The conferences allow agents to meet face-to-face with education providers, and since their establishment they have hosted the annual industry leaders' meeting of the world's major associations, FELCA (agency associations) and GAELA (school associations). The 12 ST Alphe Conferences are now held worldwide in 11 global locations: London, Frankfurt, St Petersburg, Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, Taipei, São Paulo, Istanbul, Spain and Hong Kong. Those attending the conferences use a web-based programme called Meeting Manager to facilitate booking their face-to-face meetings. The StudyTravel Star Awards are held during Alphe UK in London every year. These annual peer-voted awards, first held in 2006, reward quality across 25 categories covering study travel agencies, language providers, vocational colleges, secondary schools, service providers and associations. Organisations gather thousands of votes from professionals within the international education industry; agents vote for schools and service providers, while schools vote for their preferred agency partners and service providers. The winner of each category is revealed at a glamorous awards ceremony, held on the second evening of ST Alphe UK in London.

The StudyTravel Network is a communications platform for the entire StudyTravel industry; a news feed, discussion groups; an enhanced Meeting Manager section; the ability to create an online StudyTravel Network from your conference appointments and the 14,000 industry people already in the STN; a jobs market place; a repository for your documents and photos so you can easily share them with your Network. We have created the first industry-focused platform where everyone in the network is relevant to each other with added features such as a Jobs board and a Marketplace for late deals.
