You don’t need anything fancy ☀️

Managing your home can actually be the best way to keeping your cat comfortable when the temperature goes up like it has in the UK this week ☀️

Close the curtains or blinds on the sunny side of the house, especially around midday

Leave your internal doors open so your cat can wander freely around the house choosing the coolest spot. The bathroom tiles are often a favourite

Turn a fan on for short periods in the room they’re in (if you can afford it) just to keep the cool air up circulating. Albie’s not keen on the noise of the fan but doesn’t run from the room either

Wrap a towel around a frozen water bottle in a towel and pop it near where they sleep. I tired a damp towel too but that wasn’t thought much of!

Freeze licky treats to make a cat lolly and pop water bowls everywhere so drinking is always accessible. We pop ice cubes in ours too 🧊

Yes your cat’s behaviour is cute and quirky, but each action is also their own special way of showing trust and connection 😻

This concept of cosmic balance and responsibility gives us a pretty stark mirror on our current world, where the most vulnerable groups in our society are routinely marginalised - often villified - and where many animals face systemic cruelty through industrial scale factory farming, just to keep us all fed

When we sit by and tolerate the exploitation of those who can’t protect themselves, what message are we giving our own communities?

4000 years on and is this progress? We shouldn’t be measured by how we cater to the rich and powerful amongst us, but actually by how we extend compassion and justice to the unprotected

In the early 1900s anti-suffrage propaganda flooded the streets. Opponents of equality presented cats wearing Votes for Women sashes to suggest that women were too domestic and silly for politics, meanwhile drawing feminists as vicious hissing cats in an attempt to paint them as aggressive and unfeminine. 
Demasculated men were pictured in the home with the cat, down-trodden by their ‘oh too powerful’ wives

And at the same time they used dogs to represent men, portraying them as loyal and brave and born for public authority. The message was clear. Dogs belonged in the world of power and cats belonged trapped in the home

But the Suffragettes understood a profound truth about power. Instead of being offended by the imagery they adopted the cat as their official mascot. Two American activists even took a little black kitten, named Saxon, on a cross-country tour to secure publicity for the movement.

They took a symbol designed to minimise them and turned it into an icon of strength

We see the exact same tactics used against women today. The labels have changed but the goal remains the same. When a woman is assertive she is called aggressive, when she is independent she is seen as either lonely or difficult. The modern world still tries to weaponise traits to keep people in their place

But we all need to harness the power to redefine the language used against us. When society tries to use a stereotype to diminish you the most powerful response is to own it entirely. Let them talk while we take the symbols of our supposed weakness and wear them as power
