'I feel that patients open up more to a dental nurse than a dentist - most patients are scared or nervous and so many do not feel comfortable admitting they need help. I have a passion for oral health support - I love talking all things teeth and gums. I love the phrase "prevention is better than cure" and have always used this as my mantra.'

Shay Raven is a Registered Dental Nurse and an oral health educator in the West Midlands. In this interview in BDJ Team, Shay tells us about her career journey so far.

50 years in community dentistry

‘There was no aspirating when the therapist was using the drill - she just used a saliva ejector and I sat knitting until she was ready for the sedanol and amalgam! It wasn't just me who did this; all the nurses did and also read books!' ~ Jane Walker

In the July issue, BDJ Team meets Jane Walker who has dedicated her 50-year career to community dentistry. As Jane prepares to retire, she reflects on five decades of evolution, challenge, and service in community dentistry.
