On the 70th anniversary of Spare’s death, Starfire Publishing is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of a second edition of Zos Speaks! Encounters with Austin Osman Spare by Kenneth and Steffi Grant.
In an historic collaboration with Fulgur Press, this new edition represents a major project, with the original text revised and expanded across two volumes. The first volume records the developing friendship between the Grants and Spare, comprising diary entries, correspondence and photographs that document a vibrant social scene in a gritty post-War London. The second volume comprises Spare’s last magical works, known collectively as ‘The Zoetic Grimoire of Zos’, which he commenced in the late 1940s. Shortly before his death in 1956, he entrusted his collaborator and amanuensis Kenneth Grant with the work, to see through the publication after his death.
First published by Fulgur in 1998, and now long out of print, this new definitive edition of Zos Speaks! will be augmented with newly discovered texts and images by Spare, drawn from the extensive archives collected by Kenneth and Steffi Grant. Incorporating a fresh layout by Robert Shehu-Ansell, it will include a substantive analysis by Michael Staley, surveying the long and productive relationship between the Grants and Spare, and the subsequent development of the artist’s legacy. The first volume is projected for publication in 2027, and further details will be shared as the work is prepared.
