Today, the Band had the pleasure of hosting Student Bandmasters from the Royal Military School of Music Higher Training Wing at Wellington Barracks.
Future Bandmasters of The Royal Corps of Army Music from both first and second years of the course conducted the band through a selection of varied repertoire that musically challenged both the band and conductor.

Thank you to everybody who attended our concert in Regent Hall Salvation Army yesterday. The band performed a selection of varied music for wind band featuring composers such as John Williams, Saint-Saens, Edward Gregson and Rob Wiffin, who the band were privileged to work alongside during the week whilst preparing the music.
The concert featured soloists which included Prinicpal Clarinetist Sgt Wong, Musn Taylor on Trombone and both LCpl Collins and Goldberg during the Chuck Mangione classic ‘Feels So Good’.
We look forward to returning to Regent Hall on Friday 28th November to present a concert by small ensembles from within the band.

WELCOME OUR NEW BANDMASTER
CSgt (Bandmaster) Greg Waters was born in Bournemouth but spent much of his adolescence in the Welsh valley of Rhondda Cynon Taff attended Treorchy Comprehensive School. At 17 years old he was handed his late Grandfather’s cornet, igniting his love of brass band music, and subsequently classical and military music. Whilst studying Music The University of Sheffield he founded and musically directed the University of Sheffield Brass Band. He was given opportunities to conduct the University Symphony and Wind Orchestras, as well as performing trumpet solos, on tour in Latvia and Germany. CSgt (BM) Waters graduated with a BMus (Hons) in 2014. He loves classical music, citing Mahler, Mozart, and R Strauss as among his favourite composers, taking musical inspiration from works such as An Alpine Symphony, Francesca di Rimini, and conductor Carlos Kleiber.

CSgt (BM) Greg Waters completed basic training in February 2018, commenced Initial Trade Training at the Royal Military School of Music Kneller Hall, and in September 2018 he was assigned to The Band of the Coldstream Guards. During this time, he enjoyed all the main outputs of the Household Division and was privileged to perform at the Queen’s Birthday Parade at Windsor Castle during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. A highlight of his time in the band was performing a Star Wars themed marching display at the Avenches Tattoo, Switzerland.

After three years of service in the band, he was selected for the British Army Bandmasters course and was a member of the Bramwell Tovey Class. CSgt (BM) Waters was awarded Best Academic, Best Conductor, and Best Overall Student BM, the latter earning him the Worshipful Company of Musicians Silver Medal. He has enjoyed assignments British Army Band Sandhurst, British Army Band Catterick, and is privileged to have been assigned to the Band of the Irish Guards in July 2025 where he has already had a successful tour to Northern Ireland celebrating the regiment's 125th anniversary with a series of parades.

CSgt (BM) Waters enjoys conducting orchestras, and has conducted works by Brahms, Weber, and Bruckner with de Havilland Philharmonic, Havant Symphony Orchestra, Southampton University Sinfonietta.

One week ago, last Friday evening, The Band and Pipes of the Irish Guards travelled to Edenmore Golf Club to perform a Beating Retreat ceremony as part of our tour to Northern Ireland. This event marked the end to a charity golf day in aid of the Irish Guards Charity, held to mark the regiment’s 125th anniversary but also welcomed many appreciative locals who enjoyed the pomp and pageantry.

Thank you to Norman Briggs for the fantastic photography.

The band have now returned from Northern Ireland and are looking back on an amazing few days celebrating the regiment’s 125th anniversary; culminating in a very special parade to lay up the old colours, the first time such an event has taken place in Northern Ireland.

Thank you to everyone who attended events and supported the band on social media over the last week. Please enjoy a selection of images from the past week’s events.

Despite the rain in East Belfast today, crowds came out in force to support the Irish Guards marching to St Mark’s Church, Dundela to lay up the regiment’s old colours. Enjoy this video of the combined band, drums and pipes of the Irish Guards playing St Patrick’s Day.

The salute was taken by Regimental Colonel Major General Ghika CBE as we arrived at the church.

This morning The Band, Pipes and Drums of the Irish Guards marched around Belfast City Hall to the Belfast Cenotaph for a special service of remembrance and wreath laying.
The band performed a selection of reflective pieces including ‘Trumpet Voluntary’ and ‘Nimrod’ before Sgt Beavis sounded ‘Last Post’ and Pipe Major Fraser played the lament ‘Oft in the Stilly Night’.

There are still a few more chances to see the band in Northern Ireland; tomorrow (Saturday 6th 1500) the band will travel to Bangor for a Freedom Parade and afterwards a short concert in the Castle Gardens. Then on Sunday, a parade from Campbell College to St Mark’s Church Dundela for the laying up of old colours.
