The Skids announce 'The Absolute Game' tour in 2026 with special guests Au Pairs

The Skids will celebrate their landmark third studio album, The Absolute Game, with twelve special live shows across the UK next year.

Originally released in 1980, The Absolute Game became the band’s most commercially successful release, peaking at #9 on the UK Albums Chart and cementing their place as one of the most vital and inventive bands of their generation.

Featuring hit singles Circus Games, Goodbye Civilian, and A Woman in Winter, The Absolute Game captured the raw spirit and ambition of The Skids at their creative peak. More than four decades on, the band is bringing this iconic album back to the stage, offering fans a rare chance to experience it live in full force.

Formed in Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1977, The Skids quickly made their mark with a run of ten UK chart singles. These include the enduring anthem Into The Valley, as well as The Saints Are Coming — later reimagined by U2 and Green Day — alongside Masquerade, Working For The Yankee Dollar, Animation, and Charade.

The anniversary celebrations extend beyond the stage. To coincide with the tour, Glasgow label Last Night From Glasgow will re-release The Absolute Game, giving fans the chance to rediscover the album in a new light. Richard Jobson will also publish a memoir — also titled The Absolute Game — offering an intimate reflection on the writing, recording, and touring of the record. In addition, his new novel The Alabama Song, illustrated by Jonny Hannah, will be available throughout the tour.

Further tributes to Skids’ enduring legacy include Dunfermline Athletic FC unveiling a new strip inspired by their debut album Scared to Dance, with all Skids profits donated to The White Ribbon Charity, which works to end male violence against women. Meanwhile, a new documentary directed by Mark Sloper will premiere at Edinburgh’s Cameo Cinema on October 1st before being shown on Sky Arts.

Adding to the excitement, legendary post-punk group Au Pairs will be special guests at every show except London. These performances mark the Au Pairs’ first return to the stage in over four decades

Formed in Birmingham in 1978, Au Pairs became one of the most influential bands of the post-punk era, fronted by the striking presence of Lesley Woods — vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist — once described as “one of the most striking women in British rock.”

Together, these groundbreaking bands promise to reignite the raw energy, innovation, and urgency of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s alternative music scene—making this tour an unmissable celebration of two of the most influential acts of their era.

Drink The Sea, a new supergroup uniting some of the most acclaimed musicians of the last three decades, proudly announce their first ever UK and European tour.

The band features Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, Mad Season), Alain Johannes (Eleven, Queens of the Stone Age), Duke Garwood (Mark Lanegan Band), percussionist Lisette Garcia, and bassist Abbey Blackwell. Together, they will perform material from their two forthcoming debut albums, alongside select classics from their celebrated former bands. The performance will also include exclusive film projections from award-winning filmmaker Tad Fettig, making this an unmissable night of music and visual storytelling.

“Drink The Sea is kind of the band that all of us wanted to be in as we get older. When we were young, we played all the new alternative music, even invented a few styles of our own, and that happened back in the 1990s. Now as older musicians who have known and worked together on different projects over years and even decades, what we have found to be the most interesting thing in this new collaboration, is our focus on songwriting. It’s in our blood to write songs and everyone is really working hard to create something beautiful. I think we have succeeded with these first two debut albums, and it wasn’t hard to do it either, we all had songs flowing constantly and it was just a matter of which ones we were going to finish.

In fact, we’ve already started working on album #3. So for this first tour of Europe, the US, and South America, we’re going to play most of these new songs, along with a few favourites from our former bands (R.E.M., Screaming Trees, Mad Season, etc.) We are also playing with beautiful films that are projected behind us, created by the PBS filmmaker, Tad Fettig. Tad filmed these scenes around the world and they show incredible natural landscapes, people from all over the world, and they just kind of visually weave together the same feelings that our music has: that the Earth and the people are intimately connected and it’s much more beautiful than what the powers above us want us to believe. It'll just be us on stage with our various instruments, playing these songs along with these beautiful films, and telling the occasional story to bring it all down the Earth. The Saints ’73-’78 celebrate 50 years since their first-ever shows this November with a month-long tour taking in New Zealand, USA, Canada, the UK, Sweden and Germany.

The tour includes 5 UK shows in November, starting at the on Friday 21st at the Trinity Centre in Bristol and concluding in London at Electric Ballroom on Wednesay 26th.

Outside Australian The original Saints only ever played the UK, two shows in The Netherlands and a single French show, while Australia itself was reduced to just Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne. Australia has since been humbled by the explosion that is The Saints ’73-’78 while New Zealand, the USA, Canada, Sweden and Berlin bear witness to the joy for the very first time

From the first few bars of opening song, This Perfect Day, through to the last drops of the chaotic frenzy that is Nights In Venice, The Saints pummelled our senses with 20 songs of jaw-dropping intensity” – Backseat Mafia
Having begun in 1973 as a three piece under the moniker Kid Galahad & The Eternals, it would take until late 1975 and the arrival of bassist Kym Bradshaw before the band would take on their more recognisable name and recognisable line-up: Ed Kuepper guitar, Chris Bailey vocals, Ivor Hay drums and Kym Bradshaw bass a/k/a The Saints. It was this line-up that would record the incendiary (I’m) Stranded 7” and album of the same name just a few months later and depart Australian shores for good in May ’77.

During their 12 month stay in the UK this same line-up of The Saints would produce their only charting single This Perfect Day plus the 1-2-3-4 ep before Bradshaw would leave replaced by teenager Algy Ward, the younger brother of Saints roadie Ian. Two more stunning LP’s Eternally Yours and Prehistoric Sounds would follow before the band would dissolve, breaking into factions and returning home minus the prize.

50 years later though, and with the sound of those three incredible albums continuing to resonate and find new fans, and on the back of the recently released (I’m) Stranded 4LP box set, surviving members Kuepper and Hay decide to reunite, recruiting like-minded musicians in Mick Harvey, Peter Oxley and Mark Arm – collectively of The Birthday Party / Bad Seeds, Sunnyboys and Mudhoney– with a sold out national tour playing the classics from those three albums and drawing in 12,000 people over 12 shows. The biggest shows the band have ever played.

Recipients of numerous end-of-year ‘best of 2024’ album nods for their sophomore effort, Through Today. 10 tracks of laser-focused intensity that has seen them receive friends and favour from Henry Rollins to Built to Spill, Mudhoney to Mick Harvey! Indeed; Gerard Cosloy of Matador Records notoriety signed them to his 12XU label having witnessed them just the once.

The video features freed political prisoner LEONARD PELTIER delivering a powerful message on immigration.

Currently on the playlist at both Planet Rock and Kerrang! Radio “Pretend You Remember Me”, released through Mom+Pop Music, features Tom’s haunting voice and always searing guitar riffs. The song was written by Morello, produced/mixed/mastered by Zakk Cervini and written in solidarity with immigrants after the recent militarization of ICE against immigrant communities & supporters in Los Angeles.

Tom says, “This song is written for all the families torn apart by the recent immigrant purges and kidnappings. Children torn from their wailing mothers’ arms by masked government thugs, people coming home to find their loved ones abducted by the state. Folks who worked, suffered, and struggled for decades just to make a decent life for themselves and their family were violently separated with an uncertain future. “Pretend You Remember Me” is for them and for all those who are finding the courage to stand up against racism, tyranny, and injustice.”

The release of “Pretend You Remember Me” is in partnership with the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), a nonprofit organization that has served and protected the Los Angeles immigrant community since 1986. CHIRLA aids immigrants in getting the legal defense teams they need as well as fighting against wage theft, discrimination, and harassment in the workplace regardless of immigration status.

This summer is hotting up for The Heat Inc., who are making waves with their first-ever film soundtrack and a standout appearance on a brand-new Ramones tribute album.

Their cinematic debut comes via Hot Milk, the directorial premiere of BAFTA-nominated writer Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Ida, She Said, Disobedience). Drink The Sea is:
Peter Buck, the founding guitarist and songwriter for R.E.M. His collaborations with other bands and singer-songwriters spans dozens of albums across 40 years. His collaborations with Drink The Sea member, Barrett Martin, includes work on over 35 albums to date.

Duke Garwood, a revered British singer-songwriter and guitarist who has made multiple solo albums. He has also collaborated on albums with Screaming Trees singer, Mark Lanegan

Alain Johannes, a Chilean-American producer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer-songwriter who founded the band Eleven. His virtuosic skills have been tapped by several artists including Chris Cornell PJ Harvey Queens of the Stone Age Them Crooked Vultures and many others.

Barrett Martin, a Grammy-winning producer who was also a drummer and songwriter for the Seattle band Screaming Trees as well as the supergroup Mad Season He formed the instrumental group, Tuatara, with Peter Buck and has worked on over 200 albums as a producer and session musician, playing on albums for R.E.M., Queens Of The Stone Age, Brazilian superstar Nando Reis, and various singer-songwriters.

Lisette Garcia, a Mexican-American percussionist who is married to Barrett Martin and has played on multiple albums from around the world. She has also worked as a song-translator for albums made in South America.

Drink The Sea began three years ago in 2022, when Alain and Barrett jammed at Barrett’s studio in Olympia, WA just to see what kind of magic they could conjure together. Two years later, Barrett and Duke toured together in England and Iceland, before recording additional songs in Reykjavik. Then Barrett, Duke, and Peter met in Sao Paulo to record more songs, which continued with Alain joining them in Joshua Tree to record the final batch of songs. Final production happened at Barrett’s studio in Olympia, WA, and mixing took place in Barcelona, Spain. The result are 22 songs, spread across two debut albums, Drink The Sea I and Drink The Sea II.

Taking their name from a lyric that Duke wrote, the albums were produced and mixed by Barrett and Alain and reflect the members vast experience as songwriters, arrangers, and singers. It also shows a strong world music influence that permeates the music. Although the songs are built around traditional guitar, bass, and drums configurations, the songs also shimmer with the sounds of Arabic oud, Indian sitar, Indonesian gamelans, and various exotic percussions like Brazilian surdo, frame drum, vibraphone, marimba, and kalimba.

Drink The Sea will start touring in the late fall of 2025, and following the release of ‘Outside Again’, a new single will be released every two weeks. The two albums will be released on September 19th and October 3rd, respectively.
