tracking vocals and synth for some new material. Louis and Asher are new editions to the MAP family, having taken on one of the writing rooms long term. It was great to do some work with them and jam on some fun toys - namely the Korg Micro X and Kaossilator!

GEAR FOCUS: Weird mics!!
Sometimes you just need a bit of ‘weird’ to spice things up…
1. The Telephone
A classic home brew conversion knocked up in house from a cheap old phone and an XLR. Sounds exactly as you’d expect but… has more uses than you’d perhaps imagine. For instance it makes for a cool VERY trashy drum room mic
/ / /
2. The Dictaphone
We have a couple of these Sony dictaphones knocking around, this one has the best mic with the least internal noise… it’s still pretty noisy tbf! Capable of very cool compression and saturation effects. Has a pitch control and half speed mode for extreme lo fi madness.
/ / /
3. The Talkback Mic
A 60’s RFT 622. A very well made German omnidirectional dynamic mic. Can tolerate massive amounts of SPL / getting trodden on. Generally gets put in mad places ie on a tiled floor, taped to a toilet wall etc but also sounds great on guitar cabs

Great to have in for a batch of sessions recording bits for a soundtrack to a forthcoming feature film - viola, cello plus a dizzying array of recorders of various shapes and sizes courtesy of inc. a Great Bass and Pietzold Bass (AKA the Ikea recorder) 🤯

Also present were Rich (viola)

GEAR FOCUS: Delay ay ay ay ays… We have a respectable, well curated selection here at MAP taking various forms - tape echo, rack classics and ‘boutique’ guitar pedals.
Some of our favourites…
/ / /
Roland RE 301 - the 70’s green flavour of the classic tape delay. The 301 has the added chorus feature - sounds amazing on guitars and vocals
/ / /
Lexicon PCM 41 - an early digital delay with a really extreme modulation. This unit can do tasteful, sure but where it gets really fun is using it to create weird warped and chewed textures
/ / /
Boss DD3 - a really basic utilitarian pedal that always sounds great. Has that magic ‘sounding right’ effect on guitars.
/ / /
Honourable mentions to the Lexicon PCM 70 and Eventide H3000 and their v useful precisely controlled tempo sync’d delays. They get a lot of use!

Great couple of days with and her cohort, on bass .music on resonator plus special guest vocalist and on Celtic flute

The majority of the tracking was done live in our upstairs space with a couple of screens and careful mic placement. It’s always a slight gamble - musicians have to manage their individual levels in the room but it worked great with these guys and when it works it really captures something hard to define. An ‘energy in the room’ is usually what I call it! ✨

A very pleasant afternoon with the Bailey brothers yesterday. We worked on some new music of Robert’s adding drums, percussion and Rhodes. is one of the founding members of the influential Afro Rock band and his brother is a seasoned session drummer, playing on great records by Jonny Nash, Annette Peacock and Jeff Beck among others

stopped by to record some guitar and vocals with today. Aysia you absolutely burnt down the booth with that rap. Lovely guitar playing too.

🎛️ The studios own Fender USA tele did an excellent job of the soulful fingerpicking and the Gefell m990 did a surprise turn on rap vocal 🤔

Thanks

Jazz quartet recording with and co .noble68 .diamand

Always fun challenge doing this kind of all-in-one-space recording in our larger live room - it doubles up as a venue / bar so has a degree of ‘liveliness’ and (useable) character that lends itself nicely to acoustic instruments. We have all manner of screens, rugs and other things that can be used to temper acoustics and manage separation.

~ Belated release post ~ The Glass Frog by synth- jazz proliferator
🧙🏼‍♂️
We did the initial tracking for this album at Fish Factory studio in June last year with further overdubs and mixing done here at MAP with me -
🐠
The album features an ensemble cast from the London jazz scene inc. .rahman_ Trevor Walker and Art Themen
👌🏻
Expanded listening is also available in atmos if you happen to have the capabilities
🙃
The title track is a highlight for me - a 12 minute afrobeat odyssey introduced by rainforest sounds I had knocking around on an old cassette in the studio
