It was amazing to celebrate this important and powerful film with such an emotional audience. Now it’s time to hit the sack, before we’re back to the grindstone on Monday!

Our film THE CONTESTANT will be airing on BBC Four on Tuesday at 22:00 and available to watch on BBC Storyville via iPlayer, thereafter!

Produced over 3 years by Misifts’ own and , the film premiered on overseas in 2024, following a crazy press run with a slew of amazing reviews and billboards in Time Square. We are beyond thrilled that this film has found its home in the UK, and there’s no better place for Nasubi’s stranger than ficition story than .

After an immense premiere last Friday at , in front of a packed out and lively audience – followed by a standing ovation and an inspiring Q & A – our film about the iconic , produced by Misfits’ very own and , executive produced by and directed by , is playing in cinemas nationwide.

It’s been a long journey to get to this point, and we are beyond thrilled to finally put this film out into the world. At a time when the need for stories of love and acceptance is at an all-time high, we hope that our film can help to push the needle in the right direction. THE CONTESTANT WILL PREMIERE ON BBC STORYVILLE, ON 17TH JUNE!

“BBC Storyville has unveiled its Spring slate of international documentaries, led by a Misfits doc following a man who was tricked to take part in a Japanese reality TV show.

McQueen and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story outfit Misfits Entertainment is behind The Contestant which unpacks how the man – Nasubi – thought he was going to an audition when a TV producer led him into a room, ordered him to strip naked and told him his task was to fill out contest coupons to win what he needed to survive.
Although he could have left at any time, he stayed for 15 months, not knowing his experiences were being broadcast to over 15m people and he had become the most famous television personality in Japan.

The 2023 Hulu film was directed by Claire Titley and combines clips from the show with previously unseen footage and interviews with Nasubi, his family and the show’s producer.

Produced by Megumi Inman, Andee Ryder and Ian Bonhôte, the doc will air on 17 June.”
