The Nigerian Mindset We Need to Unlearn đłđŹ
For generations, many of us were taught that life follows a fixed timeline:
Finish secondary school.
Go to university.
Graduate.
Complete NYSC.
Get a job.
Move out.
Then start building your future.
But what if thatâs the very mindset holding so many people back?
Education is important. A university degree can open doors, expand your thinking, and create opportunities. This isnât an argument against school.
Itâs an argument against waiting.
Why do we ask children,
âWhat do you want to become in the future?â
Why not also ask,
âWhat are you building today?â
Why canât someone graduate with a degree and a portfolio?
A degree and work experience?
A degree and a business?
A degree and valuable digital skills?
Too often, we treat graduation as the starting line, when it could simply be one milestone on a journey that began years earlier.
Imagine if we encouraged young people to start creating while they were still learning.
Imagine graduating already confident, experienced, and equipped, not wondering where to begin.
Your future doesnât suddenly begin after graduation.
It doesnât begin after NYSC.
It doesnât begin after you move out.
It doesnât begin when someone finally gives you permission.
It begins the day you decide to build something.
If youâre still in school, start learning beyond the classroom.
If youâve already graduated, start where you are.
If you have an idea, begin with the resources you have.
Donât let âIâll start laterâ become a lifelong habit.
The future isnât waiting for you.
Itâs waiting for what you decide to build today.
