We are over the moon to hear so many hundreds and thousands of children across the UK singing our song MESSAGE.

The 02 Arena has been buzzing with the sound of a wonderful range of songs for the children to sing, including a medley of traditional folk songs, a Don’t Worry Mashup, Moving On Up and Proud, sung with Heather Small herself. And right there in the middle of the Programme was MESSAGE collaboratively written during a Living Song project funded by PRSF. The writers; Errollyn Wallen, Shammi Pithia, Amina Gichinga, Naomi Scarlett, Mohan Dhar, Stefan Vitalis and Jane Wheeler were all invited to the VIP evening at the 02 Arena and were thrilled to thank the conductor David Lawrence and the Musical Director Craig McLeish in person after the show. From the comments on one of the Youtube versions of the song, it seems that MESSAGE was clearly one of the children’s favourites!

to our come and Sing Day, Lambeth!

We are very excited to learn that Lambeth Music has doubled the number of secondary schools that will take part in Lambeth Sings this academic year. This is not only due to the success of our end of year event at Southbank Centre, but also as a result of the fantastic Come and Sing Day in November, created by Southbank Centre and Lambeth Music Service. Five Lambeth secondary schools attended the day, which brought together a number of wonderful artists, including Aga Serugo-Lugo, Osnat Schmool, Randolph Matthews and Nathan Davonte.

The young people from across Lambeth Schools sang their hearts out in the foyer of the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Living Song Young Artists Richie, Harine and Lilian supported the day, encouraging the young people and supporting the artists in each workshop. You can catch a glimpse of them here, enjoying an opportunity to sing at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as they wait for schools to arrive.

We very much look forward to our continued partnership with Lambeth Music Service, Southbank Centre and Pegasus Opera for the Sing Lambeth project throughout this new year!

On 24th and 25th November 2022 lead trainer Darren Abrahams from Musicians Without Borders, (MwB) took four professional and ten young artists on a practical journey of discovery based on principles and practices of MwB. Trainees learned about the impact of trauma on our bodies and minds and explored how music making, especially singing in community can help healing.

Through skilled activities and approaches a safe space for workshop participants and therapy groups to express themselves can be created, and they can begin to experience integration back into their lives again.

Participants received certification for their participation in this empowering two-day training and the professional artists / workshop leaders will now lead a series of ‘Singing for Mental Health and Well Being’ workshops in the local community, drawing on the training, with assistance and support from young artists. We have had highly positive feedback from all the participants about the training and the song ’Safe Space’ written collaborative by the participants. You can hear Richie’s Demo of the song playing in the video and here: https://bit.ly/3W26lel

Thank you to Newham Council and Compost London for funding to make this project possible. Living Song has been awarded a grant from Newham Council to lead this project. COVID-19 has affected every aspect of our residents’ lives, including many mental health and wellbeing challenges. The long-term impact of trauma, anxiety, grief and distress, as well as the current financial pressures faced by thousands of Newham residents due to the rising cost of living, are likely to increase mental health and wellbeing concerns.

We look forward to our next workshop!

Throwback to the Fair Energy Futures event by the Fair Energy Campaign!

Members of Living Song’s Youth Advisory Board took part in the Fair Energy Futures Symposium at Queen Elizabeth Park, Newham. The local Young Artists came together to write a new song focused on their concerns, hopes and actions towards fairer energy for all. Harine, Lucian and Brendon then performed their song ‘live’ at the afternoon Community Fair for delegates. They were also invited to take part in a radio podcast Q & A as part of the event, sharing their stories about discussions and song writing collaborations around relevant topics in their lives.

The symposium also welcomed a number of presenters talking about the challenges of fuel poverty, community energy and collective action, including Alex Jeremy from geocapita, Prof. Monica Giulletti from Loughborough University London and Clemantine Cowton, Director of External Affairs, Octopus Energy.

The Young Artists are now keen to record their new song in a local studio. If you would like to help them in this aim, we invite you to make a donation on our donate page.

Sing Lambeth Finale

The Living Song team of artists, young artists and trainers have all expressed their joy at being part of the programme and final singing event for SING LAMBETH at the end of July. In spite of all the challenges of heat waves, rail strikes and Covid, Lambeth Academy Lambeth Academy and the London Nautical School London Nautical School still managed to attend the day at Southbank Centre Southbank Centre. Other participating schools in the programme had been able to enjoy school-based workshops and singing resources for their students throughout the year and we look forward to seeing them for phase two 2022-23.

Accompanied by young musicians from Tomorrow’s Warriors the young people threw their energy into the workshops and rehearsals, leading up to an ‘informance’ of the year’s repertoire at the end of the day. The event was co-led by Lambeth Music Service partners, Southbank Centre and Pegasus Opera as well as Living Song.

It was supported by three members of the Living Song Youth Advisory Board, two of whom have followed up the opportunity by attending Tomorrow’s Warriors workshops since! We celebrate the collaboration and connection!

We would like to thank Lambeth Music Service for inviting us to be part of this wonderful singing programme, and very much look forward to next steps through 2022-23.
