"Monsters are human creations. They are the product of our imaginations, recurring and reforming across time and space. The word monster comes from the Latin monstrare, ‘to show’ – monsters show what is within. They represent our greatest fears: fear of the unknown, fear of the dark, fear of the natural world – even fear of the self."

You can read an extract from The Book of Sea Monsters on the Bloomsbury Publishing website:

Read an extract from Prema Arasu's The Book of Sea Monsters: Leviathans of Literature; a fascinating and beautifully illustrated journey across the world and through the centuries in search of the sea monster.

Tennyson's depiction of the Kraken.

With their excess size, claws, tentacles and bloodlust, monsters represent our greatest fears: the unknown, the dark, the natural world and even ourselves. As stories passed from generation to generation, they were analogues for dangerous weather events, foreign invaders, enemy nations, physical phenomena and real animals.

On Friday 14 June 1968 Suhaili, a tiny ketch, slipped almost unnoticed out of Falmouth harbour steered by the solitary figure at her helm, Robin Knox-Johnston. Ten and a half months later Suhaili, paintwork peeling and rust streaked, her once white sails weathered and brown, her self-steering gone, her tiller arm jury rigged to the rudder head, came romping joyously back to Falmouth to a fantastic reception for Robin, who had become the first man to sail round the world non-stop single-handed.

What charts should you carry on board with you?

A passage chart should be used to determine overall strategy and courses to steer. Ideally you should find one that covers the whole trip, because trying to move a course from one to the next is never easy and can lead to errors at sea.

Landfall charts giving enough detail to approach the coast are required for your departure point, your destination, and any other part of your passage that may bring you close enough inshore to need them.

If you are unfamiliar with the harbour of your choice, you’ll often need
a large-scale harbour chart to see you up to the quay.

Piloting with a paper chart backed up with a tablet plotter can offer the best of both worlds.
