On Sunday, 23rd November 2025, the city of Leicester made history by hosting the first-ever commemoration of the ill-fated S.S. Tilawa, which met its tragic end 23rd November 1942. This significant event was organised by the Tilawa 1942 association, dedicated to preserving the memory and stories of those involved with the ship.
Remembering the S.S. Tilawa.
The S.S. Tilawa was a passenger and cargo steamship that met a tragic fate during World War II. On November 23, 1942, it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine (I-29) in the Indian Ocean, resulting in the loss of 280 lives. The commemoration aimed to honor those who lost their lives and recognize the resilience and courage of the survivors.
The Importance of Remembrance
This historic event served not only as a remembrance of the past but also as a reminder of the importance of preserving history for future generations. By commemorating the S.S. Tilawa, the event highlighted the power of collective memory and the need to keep such stories alive.
