From Flora: A Frozen English Garden, a closer look at the Cotinus coggygria, often called the smoke tree for its soft, vaporous plumes. Marisa Culatto’s series features 35 frozen still life works, each pairing gathered plant specimens with botanical writing by Eduardo Barba and a watercolour by Anna Tiulkina. The smoke tree’s shifting reds, winter frost and long history noted by Theophrastus echo the themes at the heart of the book: beauty, transience and the urge to hold on to a moment. With an introduction by curator Greg Hilty, Flora brings art and botany together in a quiet study of time.
