Gautam Gambhir named new Indian cricket team head coach

Gambhir takes over as head coach from Rahul Dravid, who stepped down from the role after India's T20 World Cup win.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday announced Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team.

Taking to his Twitter account, Shah posted, “It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr. Gautam Gambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward.”

“His clear vision for Team India, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey,” Shah added.

Gambhir also took to X to react to his appointment for the first time. “India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true!”

Former T20 and ODI World Cup winner with India takes over as head coach from Rahul Dravid, who stepped down from the role after India’s T20 World Cup win.

Having taken over as team mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2024, Gambhir was hailed for guiding the franchise to the title, having already captained KKR to two league titles during his playing days.

Meanwhile, the Indian board will soon invite applications for the team’s support staff as the tenures of batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Dilip ended after the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies. BCCI secretary Jay Shah had already stated that the new coach – Gambhir – will join the Indian team from the Sri Lanka series.

In his first assignment with the team – three T20Is and ODIs in Sri Lanka – Gambhir will miss the services of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who have been rested after a triumphant T20 World Cup campaign.

Super Eagles player seeks divorce, demands N1bn damages from UK-based pastor

Super Eagles striker, Kayode Olarenwaju, has urged a Federal Capital Territory High Court to dissolve his marriage to his estranged wife, Ezinne, because it has broken down irretrievably.

The Turkey-based footballer who is also seeking custody of their children, urged the court to order a UK-based pastor, Tobi Adegboyega, to pay him N1bn in damages for the emotional trauma, financial loss, and loss of goodwill caused by his “adulterous affair” with Ezinne.

Olarenwaju and Ezinne have been engaged in a marital battle following allegations of infidelity, among other issues.

The matter took another twist when Ezinne instituted legal action against her estranged husband.

In the suit dated March 20, 2024, Ezinne accused Olarenwaju of making baseless allegations of infidelity and witchcraft against her and her mother, adding that Olarenwaju damaged her phone in the process.

She said, “Upon arriving from Turkey personally and without prior notice to his wife or children, the Respondent rained abuses on the Petitioner and her mother, making baseless accusations of infidelity and witchcraft and trying to force the Petitioner out of her matrimonial home. In the process, the Respondent smashed the Petitioner’s iPhone 15 pro-Max beyond repair.”

However, in a cross-petition marked PET/304/2024 filed on July 1, 2024, a copy of which was seen by our correspondent on Monday, the Super Eagles striker accused Ezinne of repeatedly committing adultery with the UK-based pastor and other men since their marriage in 2013.

Ezinne and the UK-based pastor are the Respondent and Co-Respondent respectively in Olarenwaju’s cross-petition.

The Super Eagles striker also claimed in his cross-petition that his estranged wife kidnapped their children, who were later rescued by the Department of State Services personnel.

He said, “Whilst the Cross Petitioner was still trying to get his facts right and phantom a means to have all the lingering issues resolved, the Respondent, under the guise of going to church on March 24, 2024, abducted the children of the marriage and absconded to an unknown location in Abuja.

The Respondent then informed his lawyer to write a petition to the DSS regarding the abduction of the children of the marriage.

“Pursuant to the aforesaid petition, the DSS was able to track the location of the Respondent and got her arrested with the children of the marriage in her hideout somewhere in Brains and Hammers Estate, Abuja. The Respondent was subsequently granted bail.”

Olanrewaju accused his estranged wife of undermining their joint business ventures.

He said, “The Cross Petitioner in his bid to have a lifetime investment in Nigeria decided sometime in 2019 to incorporate a company and indeed incorporated DE- J-S Concept Ltd. as a vehicle for his investments in Nigeria and also made the Respondent a shareholder and a director.

“ The Cross Petitioner thereafter purchased many properties from one realtor, Ugochukwu Igboanugo of Ziloc Constructions Limited, who was initially introduced to the Cross Petitioner by the Respondent and it was later discovered that the said Ugochukwu Igboanugo was an ex-lover of the Respondent.

“Unknown to the Cross Petitioner, the Respondent has connived with the said Ugochukwu Igboanugo and collected all the property documents and has been solely and personally collecting rent proceeds from the properties, expending same on her amorous relationship with the Co-Respondent to the Cross Petition.”

On why the court should grant him the custody of the children, Olarenwaju said, “The Respondent is not bothered with the educational and mental well-being and stability of the children of the marriage as the same is evident in her actions by having romantic and sex-related discussions with the Co-Respondent and other men in the presence of the children. Indeed, her absconding with the children whilst school is in session without regard to academics leaves much to be desired.”

His reliefs read, “ An order for a decree of dissolution of the marriage between the Cross-Petitioner and Respondent/Petitioner on the grounds that the marriage has broken down irretrievably.

“An order granting custody of the children of the marriage to the Cross-Petitioner with right of access to the Respondent.

“An order against the Co-Respondent for the payment of the sum of N1,000,000,000 to the Cross Petitioner for the emotional trauma, financial loss and loss of goodwill occasioned by the adulterous relationship between the Co-Respondent and the Respondent.”

The matter has been slated for hearing on September 24, 2024.

No Rohit, Virat, Bumrah for SL tour as BCCI wants them to rest before upcoming home season

The Indian cricket board wants the captain of the T20 World Cup winning team and the other two seniors to take some more rest before returning for a full season in September when Bangladesh travels to India for two Tests and three T20Is starting on September 19.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah will not be part of the Indian team that will tour Sri Lanka later this month.

The Indian Express understands that the Indian cricket board wants the captain of the T20 World Cup winning team and the other two seniors to take some more rest before returning for a full season in September when Bangladesh travels to India for two Tests and three T20Is starting on September 19.

The tour of Sri Lanka features three ODIs and as many T20Is, from July 27 to August 7. Sharma and Kohli have retired from T20Is after the recent World Cup, while Bumrah has said that he will continue playing the format for the country. It is learnt that the selection committee will meet next week to pick the team.

“Senior players can take some rest and get ready for the full cricket season ahead. Rohit, Virat and Bumrah have been offered rest and will join the team for the Test matches against Bangladesh in September,” a source in the BCCI told The Indian Express.

Post Bangladesh, the Indian team will host New Zealand at home from October 16-November 5 for three Tests. They will then fly to South Africa to play four T20I’s between November 8 and 15 before a five-match Test series in Australia starting on November 22.

BCCI to call applications for support staff
Meanwhile, the Indian board will soon invite applications for the team’s support staff as the tenures of batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Dilip ended after the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.

The board’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has already interviewed two candidates – Gautam Gambir and WV Raman – for the post of head coach and only an official announcement is awaited. Gambhir is expected to take up the role, and the delay in announcement is only because the board and the former left-handed opening batsman are in the final stages of salary negotiation.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has stated that the new coach will join the Indian team from the Sri Lanka series.

It is learnt that the board will give Gambhir a free hand to choose his support staff. It’s not clear whether the Indian team will have a batting coach going ahead, as Gambhir himself has been a successful opening batsman across formats. He was Kolkata Knight Riders mentor in their 2024 title-winning IPL season.

BBC Breakfast in presenter shake-up as Sally Nugent missing from show
BBC Breakfast's regular host Sally Nugent was nowhere to be seen on Monday (July 8) and was replaced by a very familiar face

BBC Breakfast underwent another presenter shake-up during the latest instalmet, as regular host Sally Nugent was missing from the red sofa.

On Monday's show (July 8) Jon Kay was back at the helm but was joined by Sarah Campbell, who often steps in to host the popular news show during the weekends. Meanwhile, Sally was nowhere to be seen.

Sally's disappearance comes hot on the heels of her coverage during the UK's General Election last week. Just like her colleague Naga Munchetty, Sally was offering viewers further insight as the votes came in on Thursday night (July 4).

Sally presented from Sunderland place which has become known for its history of being first to declare countless times over the years when it comes to General Elections. Meanwhile her co-stars Clive Myrie and Laura Keunssberg led proceedings back in the studio.

Last week, Sally returned to BBC Breakfast after a two-day absence in late June. At the time, Sarah was on hand to step in and replace her.

Announcing the change on Instagram on June 26, Jon shared a snap of himself and Sarah in the studio alongside their colleague Ben Boulos. Captioning the photo, Jon mentioned that it had been a year since BBC Breakfast moved to a new studio in Salford.

He penned: "Good morning from your BBC Breakfast team. Lovely to have Sarah with us - covering for Sally this week. It was exactly a year ago today that we moved into our lovely new studio.

"Over the last twelve months our team has interviewed hundreds of guests on the sofa, covered thousands of stories and last month welcomed the BBC News at One to join us in Salford. Happy Birthday studio!"

BBC Breakfast's Sally Nugent makes return after absence baffles viewers
Sally Nugent returned to her BBC Breakfast duties on Monday after disappearing from screens for two days in a row last week, leaving viewers at home baffled

A BBC Breakfast presenter has returned following a period of absence.

Last week, 52-year-old Sally Nugent was absent for two days in a row, leaving many at home baffled. Last week, BBC News anchor Sarah Campbell stepped in for Sally on both Monday and Tuesday for the morning broadcast of the programme. Despite being absent, Sally did appear on the programme on Friday during a pre-recorded interview with Lindsey Burrow, the wife of the late Rob Burrow who died earlier this month.

Last week, Sally broke her silence during her absence as she shared a memory on social media alongside make-up artist, Patrick Bartley. The image showed her alongside the MUA, Channel 4's Steph McGovern, and BBC News journalist Lizzie Simmons-Wood. The group appeared to be enjoying a sunny holiday together, all sporting smiles and sunglasses.

Although she may be back on the sofa, Sally's return was met with criticism following an interview with Labour MP, Jonathan Ashworth. During the interview, the Shadow Paymaster General told Nugent and viewers at home: "If you want change in the country - if you've had enough of all the economic chaos that puts your mortgage up.

"If you've had enough of all the scandals from the partying in Downing Street to the insider gambling scandal we've seen in this campaign. If you've had enough of waiting for longer and longer on the NHS then vote for change on Thursday. Do not wake up on Friday to five more years of Rishi Sunak," ahead of Thursday's General Election.

However, viewers at home were far from impressed as they took to X, formerly known as Twitter to share their frustrations. One penned: "That interview with John Ashworth by Sally Nugent was hopeless. Why didn't she tackle some of his comments, which is only ever to criticise the Conservatives. He looks like a little boy and speaks like one, but..."

A second went on to write: "Is Sally Nugent tired? Not a great interview with Ashworth. ." Meanwhile, a third fumed: "Jonathan Ashworth bland and lacklustre on this morning ." As another commented: " Am I watching a live Labour Party political broadcast from Jonathan Ashworth. Uninterrupted and uncontested by the interviewer, Sally Nugent. Except for the occasional prompt. Did I miss the other parties getting this opportunity?"

However, some were in favour of the interview, with one happy fan writing: ", it’s normally difficult to praise a politician. This morning I was very impressed by Johnathan Ashworth Calmly answering all questions without blaming others. Well done John."

Harry Could Return to Britain in a 'New Role' or 'Without Meghan'—Bodyguard

Prince Harry could return to the U.K. in a new role but possibly without Meghan Markle, according to Princess Diana's former bodyguard.

Ken Wharfe protected Diana from 1987 to 1993, sharing her life through some of the most turbulent years of her marriage to Prince Charles and harassment by the media. For a year before he was assigned solely to the princess, Wharfe also headed up the security detail for Princes William and Harry, meeting the brothers when they were just five and three-years-old.

The former police protection officer has become a regular royal commentator since he left Diana's service in 1993 citing her "erratic behavior" at the time of her separation from Charles as a contributing factor for handing in his resignation.

Earlier in August Wharfe published a book to mark the 25th anniversary of Diana's tragic death at the age of 36 in a high-speed Paris car crash which will be marked on August 31.

The book Diana: Remembering the Princess has been co-written with journalist Ros Coward and sees Wharfe discuss not only Diana's life but also those of her sons and how they have developed after her death.

So far Princes Harry and William have not commented on the content of Wharfe's book or the claims made therein.

Speaking, per the Daily Mirror on Friday, Wharfe voiced his belief that Harry would one day return to the U.K. to live after the prince moved with his family to California in 2020, stepping down as a working member of the royal family.

"I base that on gut reaction really," the ex-bodyguard who watched the prince grow up said. "I just cannot see them forever more living in California.

"It's clear to me that Harry is not quite a fish out of sea—I mean he is getting involved in charitable work and he has these attachments to Netflix and other companies but quite where they'll end up we don't know."

"I just have this feeling," he then continued, "that he could well be back in a new role, with or without Meghan—I honestly don't know."

In Diana: Remembering the Princess, released last week, Wharfe elaborates claiming that Harry could end up dividing his time "between two continents, with his wife and children largely staying in the US, where they all seem to feel more comfortable."

On the subject of Meghan, Wharfe wrote of his belief that it was she who was the driving force behind the couple's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 during which they discussed their feelings of ill-treatment from the royal "Firm" and also alleged that an unnamed member of the royal family had made racially insensitive comments about the skin color of their future children.

"I feel that the Oprah Winfrey interview with Harry and Meghan was not one that he wanted to happen," he wrote.

"I firmly believe that he went along with it at Meghan's insistence, and I had a sense that he was particularly unhappy with that interview.

"Some of his remarks seemed out of kilter. He seemed unsettled about discussing personal things."

On the prospect of the royal writing his own memoir, however, Wharfe has spoken of his belief that the opportunity may afford Harry a chance similar to Princess Diana in the 1990s when she collaborated with biographer Andrew Morton in an attempt to get her side of the story about her marriage to Prince Charles into the public domain.

"Publishing his own memoir replicates exactly what his mother has done," he wrote.

"At the time of the Morton book, had Diana asked me what I thought, I would have said, 'It's not a very good idea, Ma'am.' Actually, that would have been without good reason.

"Now when people ask me, I understand exactly why she did it and can give very good reasons why it was right for her to do so. Maybe Harry has found himself in the same situation.

"He's been vilified," Wharfe continued. "He hasn't been ignored, but his side of the story is often one that people did not want to listen to—what better way to get that heard than to write a book?"

Though no firm publication date has yet been given for Harry's memoir, a press release issued on the project's announcement in 2021 stated that the book would be available in late 2022.
