Property developers are taking the p**s! And, Hackney Council's failure to sign Ridley Road Shopping Village at Ridley Road Market as a community asset leaves traders facing eviction - again! Right now traders are occupying the building, and don't have any electricity and this is a call out for community power (literally) and assistance. Please, if you can help, get in touch with
To : What an effin liberty! 😪 You know you could have sorted this but you didn't - Sorry for cursing, but, in 2022, traders knocked back Larochette Real Estate and agents Rainbow Properties plans to evict and replace them with luxery flats and offices.
It was the brilliant local campaign that forced them to keep the indoor market open. In turn, they promised a renovation and support for indoor traders, artists and crafts people. the Council agreed to sign the building up as a community asset and things were looking up. But as old-time people say, "mouth mek fi sey anyting" and Larochette and the Council showed their true colours: No consultations with tenants resulting in a shoddy makeover - no heating, unfinished workmanship, no cafe to give shoppers a place to sit and no windows etc (OK, OK, the toilets are much improved). The landlords cruel and rellentless in strategy: Traders on trumped up charges from 3 Yrs ago, have suddenly been cautioned, and eviction notices have been issued. Last week the local community galvanised, warded off bailiffs and are now helping traders to occupy the building.
So why didn't Hackney sign the building up as an asset? And, who are Larochette Real Estate's Inc (registered offshore in the Virgin Isles)? And, who are their agents, the West Hampstead-based Rainbow Properties ('Rainbow'?? Really???).
What we can be absolutely certain of is that fighting these developers is a fight inside the belly of the beast. We have to be ready because these lot are underhanded.
Big up Ridley Road Indoor Market traders, support , come down to Ridley tomorrow for family arts and crafts, donate lights, generators, etc as traders got no electricity.

One love! 🩵

A personal story: Still standing - incredible!
Grandma Ersie & Grandpa Wilfred's house in St Elizabeth, JA, got a real battering from Hurricane Melissa, but, unlike other family members' houses, which have been utterly destroyed, it's still going strong. They built this house with love, sweat, and the money they'd saved from working hard in the UK. Not many of the Windrush Generation got to make good on their dreams and go back in the 80s and build their house. They lived the autumn of their lives here together. Grandma Ersie lived here on her own when Grandpa died tragically in a road accident. They're both buried out the back. This is our family home.

Big thanks to everyone who has donated and helped us reach our original target of 1K to send essentials to JA. We hope you can help us reach 1.5K!!! Donate safely: link in bio

Meet the Artists: If Mi Nuh Laugh Mi Cry - Hackney Art Activism Festival, "Resistance" Exhibition, Gillett Square, April 27th - May 6th

The exhibition opens with a We Remember vigil for Hackney Community Defence Association (HCDA), a group of local people who held the police to account in the 80s and 90s. The group came together on cases of police injustice including the death of Colin Roach and Trevor Monerville's case.

We're sharing the stories of artists and activists and how they defended the community...
