Still spared from overtourism, this region holds many surprises for those who venture there.

As your plane descends towards Kansai airport, be sure to look out the window. You will be rewarded with the remarkable sight of a perfectly rectangular island floating in the sea. This man-made marvel of engineering is the airport you’re about to land at.

Faced with such an astounding sight, you can be forgiven for not paying much attention to the sea the island is set in. But if this first fleeting glimpse of the waters is all you ever see, you will be missing out on one of Japan’s most enchanting secret destinations.

The akiya problem has so many ramifications that finding a long-lasting solution seems almost impossible. One person who has written extensively about those issues is Kubo Tomoko, an Assistant Professor at the University of Tsukuba where she teaches Life and Environmental Sciences. An expert in urban geography, Kubo-sensei obtained a PhD (Science) from the Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Tsukuba. After working as a research fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, she has held her current position since 2018. Kubo has received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Young Scientist Award in 2021 and the International Geographical Union Early Career Award 2022.

New article online ! 📣

The akiya (vacant house) issue in Japan has been long seen primarily as a rural problem; an outcome of depopulation and youth migration from the countryside, leaving behind abandoned homes and farmland. However, since the 2010s, urban areas have increasingly faced their own vacant housing crisis. In major metropolitan regions, empty homes have proliferated in suburban neighborhoods developed at the outer edge of daily commuting range. In the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, Tokorozawa City in Saitama Prefecture enacted a local ordinance addressing vacant houses in 2010, followed by Ushiku City in Ibaraki Prefecture in 2012. National recognition of the problem came in 2015, when the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLITT) introduced the Special Measures Act on Vacant Houses.

[Eat] They say that people delivered soba and udon noodles in Japan as early as the Edo period started in 1603. The delivery culture in Japan, called demae is indeed very strong. Ranging from sushi, pork cutlets, pizza and even hamburgers, you can say that there is almost no genre of food that cannot be delivered in Japan.

[Culture No14] One of the hundreds of friendly mascot characters in Japan, this adorable bear from Kumamoto prefecture who has captured the hearts of a nation came to Europe last July. Created in 2011 for the inauguration of the Kyushu express train line, Kumamon was to be the representative of Kumamoto prefecture. [Eat] In the mini-markets, one of the most interesting shelves is the sweet one, with its items that change according to the season. Compared to the West where the customers are used to seeing the same products over and over, in Japan, due partly to the sales distribution system in the supermarket sector, 60% to 80% of products need to be regularly renewed.

[Culture] Since the end of the Second World War, the approach to s*x in films has changed radically. S*x and eroticism permeate every aspect of Japanese pop culture. Even putting aside its massive p**n industry and the ever-popular he**ai genre, these subjects have been amply covered by all media. Literature, films, manga and anime have explored s*x in all its aspects, oscillating between titillation and the discussion of serious social issues.
