Happy 82nd Birthday, Your Holiness, Dalai Lama! ⁣

In honoring His Holiness the Dalai Lama, we felt inspired to share an ancient Bodhisattva prayer for humanity. It is said that His Holiness recites this prayer daily as part of his waking ritual.
⁣
This prayer was written by Shantideva, an Indian Buddhist monk of the Mahāyāna tradition, who lived in the 8th century. He is most known as the man who authored the Bodhicaryavatara, also known as Bodhisattva Way of Life, a long poem that details the process of attaining enlightenment.

Bodhisattva Prayer for Humanity:

“May I be a guard for those who need protection
A guide for those on the path
A boat, a raft, a bridge for those who wish to cross the flood.
May I be a lamp in the darkness
A resting place for the weary,
A healing medicine for all who are sick;
A vase of plenty, a tree of miracles
And for the boundless multitudes of living beings.
May I bring sustenance and awakening
Enduring like the earth and sky
Until all beings are freed from sorrow
And all are awakened.”

A conversation with His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:

Devotee: Srila Prabhupada, if material nature is the absence of Krishna, then what is material?

Srila Prabhupada: Nothing is material. If you continue Krishna consciousness, there’s nothing material. When we offer this flower in Krishna consciousness, is it material?

Devotee: No.

Srila Prabhupada: So how has it become spiritual? It was material in the tree and now it has become spiritual? No. It is spiritual. As long as I was thinking that it is meant for my enjoyment, it was material. As soon as I take it for Krishna’s enjoyment, it is spiritual.

Devotee: So actually this entire world is spiritual.

Srila Prabhupada: Yes. That we want—to engage everything in Krishna’s service. Then this world will be the spiritual world.

There are five kinds of liberation, the least important of which is called sāyujya, to become one with the Supreme.

Devotees don’t care for such liberation because they are actually intelligent. Nor are they inclined to accept any of the other four kinds of liberation, namely to live on the same planet as the Lord, to live with Him side by side as an associate, to have the same opulence, or to attain the same bodily features. They are concerned only with glorifying the Supreme Lord and His auspicious activities.

Pure devotional service is śravaṇaṁ kīrtanam. Pure devotees, who take transcendental pleasure in hearing and chanting the glories of the Lord, do not care for any kind of liberation; even if they are offered the five liberations, they refuse to accept them, as stated in the Bhāgavatam in the Third Canto. Materialistic persons aspire for the sense enjoyment of heavenly pleasure in the heavenly kingdom, but devotees reject such material pleasure at once. The devotee does not even care for the post of Indra. A devotee knows that any pleasurable material position is subject to be annihilated at a certain point.

Why do devotees offer such reverence to Sri Tulsi? Tulsi, is a venerated bhakta in plant form. She is recognized as a feminine deity, also known as Vrnda Devi, and she is the beloved of Sri Krsna. Tulasī is mentioned in the vedic scriptures of India, and in the Padmapurana (24.2) it states that Lord Śiva tells the sage Nārada about this power: "Oh Nārada, wherever Tulsi grows there is no misery. She is the holiest of the holy. Wherever the breeze blows her fragrance there is purity. Viṣṇu showers blessing on those who worship and grow Tulsi. The reason why Tulsi is sacred because Brahmā resides in the roots, Viṣṇu resides in the stems and leaves and Rudra resides in the flowering tops." Because of this, Tulasī is glorified throughout the Purāṇas and Pañcarātra. The great Viṣṇu created Tulasī at the time of the churning of the milk ocean for the spiritual upliftment of all souls in the material world.⁣

O Tulasī, beloved of Kṛṣṇa, I repeatedly offer my obeisances unto you. My cherished desire is to attain the service of Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa.

Nectarean times with the devotees in Indonesia! This little boy to my left was the highlight of my day. He came to sit with me early on during darshan and we managed to exchange names and a few different dance moves. He was such a riot! Totally showed me up. Across continents, we can always find sangha within the temple.

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the son of Sri Jagannath Mishra (Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu). I offer my obeisances unto the mrdanga, from which sweet and nectarean sound emanates. I offer my obeisances again and again unto the mrdanga which has thousands of good qualities and I offer my obeisances unto Lord Baladeva who assumes the form of the mrdanga to serve Lord Caitanya.⁣

Sri mrdanga was invented 500 years ago for the specific purpose of serving the practice of kirtan. Mrdanga is also a representation of Krsna’s instruments, just like his flute, as an expansion of Balaram. The 32 strap holes around the clay drum represent the 32 syllables of the Maha Mantra, where 32 straps on the left and 32 straps on the right side interlace around the body = 64 mohanta (great Vaisnavas). Played with both hands on either side, it’s melodic quality brings auspiciousness, similar to the blow of a conch shell. Our hearts soar when we hear Sri Mrdanga play!
