Hello, this is Hwanyi.
Yesterday was the opening day of “Ajar”, and I’m deeply thankful to everyone who came.

The exhibition is open until September 15, so feel free to drop in if you’re nearby!

I also received many kind and thoughtful responses to my work. Some people said that even though the stories are sad and heavy, there is a touch of humour that makes them smile.
Through my work, I hope to share the message that you are not alone, that others have gone through similar experiences, and that we can empathise with each other’s pain. I’m grateful to hear that this intention has been felt and understood.

In one corner of the gallery, you can also find my book ‘Ajar’, which includes scenes from my animations and photographs of original drawings.

Today is the last day of my takeover here.
Thank you so much for following my posts and for your support and empathy.
I hope to see you again in London one day!

Hello, this is Hwanyi.
Since Monday, I’ve been posting here on the Pocko account to share more about my exhibition and my work.

Today, I’d like to introduce one of my lighter pieces, a film called Fifty Hands. This work also comes from a time when I was shut in my room, drawing alone. But at that time, drawing still brought me comfort.
It was when I began to gather the courage to create my portfolio. I had so many ideas I wanted to draw, and I remember thinking,
“If only I had fifty hands, I could draw all of them at once.”
That thought led to this animation.

The drawings I’m sharing here were made after finishing the film. They reflect parts I wasn’t fully satisfied with or wanted to revisit.
Both the original animation and these drawings are included in the exhibition.

Hello, this is Hwanyi. 
Today I’d like to talk about one of my animations, Ear, Eye and Head. This piece tells the story of why I chose social isolation.

In the film, the main character removes their ear, then their eye, and finally their head.
It may sound gruesome, but the reasons behind their actions are very ordinary and familiar.

I started making this animation in 2016, during one of the most difficult times in my life.
Although I grew up and graduated from university in Korea, I felt like I had no skills other than drawing. I felt useless, stayed inside, and spent my days drawing.
The character hurts themselves to disconnect from others and the world.
But living without ears, eyes, or a head is not a normal life. People who choose isolation are just like this character. They are ordinary people, too.

Through this work, I want to keep speaking about their pain and mine.

(Day 4) Hi, here talking about my exhibition ‘Through the Window’. I mentioned about merging into a tree yesterday. So, these are the instructions to become a tree, it’s not that deep! ;
1. View tree(s)
2. Disassemble oneself into atoms
3. Merge into a tree
4. Be a tree
5. Be a part of forest (optional)

My work is dominantly made by ink and acrylic on paper at the moment. You can see my inks in the last slide:)

(Day 3) Hello, it’s again sharing about my upcoming exhibition ‘Through the Window’.
I went in search of trees with the aim of merging into trees ; their layers, rhythms, movements, their tales, their system of organisation and gathering. I was most impressed by blob-looking trees creating a view like a large fluffy carpet. In order to merge into a tree, I decided to disassemble myself into atoms. In this picture, she will tell you how to do so hopefully! ⚫︎⚫︎⚫︎
