James Emmanuel at SXSW London 😍

Looking back at some of the performances we hosted at Abbey Road Studio Four during SXSW London at Colours Hoxton… how about the incredible James Emmanuel? 🎶

We also had the pleasure of mastering both 'Nothing But Love' and 'Brothers and Sisters' here in Room 7 with Alex Wharton behind the desk 🎛️

It was just another Friday morning outside the studios

At around 11:30am on 8th August 1969, photographer Iain Macmillan climbed a stepladder in the middle of Abbey Road. A police officer held up the traffic, The Beatles crossed the street a few times, six shots later, and it was done 🤯

What was meant to be a quick cover shoot turned into one of the most recognisable images in music history... and made the zebra crossing just outside our front steps a destination for fans around the world. Not bad for ten minutes’ work!

This August, we’re spotlighting some of the groundbreaking gear and innovations that have shaped our studios. First up, we’re taking a look at The RS-56 Universal Tone Control Equaliser - affectionately known as the Curve Bender 🎛️

Originally developed by EMI’s technical team in the 1950s, the RS-56 was designed for mastering and disc-cutting, offering precise control over frequency shaping. With its distinctive rotary switched and three-band EQ, it quickly became a favourite among engineers for its warmth and musicality 🎶

Mirek Stiles takes us through the story behind this iconic piece of Abbey Road engineering - and how it paved the way for modern EQ design ✨

There’s no denying the legacy of ‘Running Up That Hill'. The track was a hit when it was released in 1985, spending 11 weeks in the charts, and finally claimed the top spot in 2022 - 37 years later- following its iconic inclusion in Stranger Things 💫

Tucked away on the B-side was ‘Under The Ivy’. Captured here for ITV’s The Tube, this performance in Studio One gave us a glimpse of Kate at her most raw and vulnerable. A haunting and intimate masterpiece from one of music’s most visionary artists 🎶

We’ll be playing these songs loud today! 🔊

Highlighting all our musical firsts…the gig that changed it all, the first inspiring record and the early song that sparked the journey.

For English Teacher's Lily Fontaine, it was an open mic night in Colne, a Beatles album passed down from her mum and a uni audition song she’d rather forget (but kind of owes everything to).

Happy Birthday to the legend that is Kate Bush 🎂

Kate has always danced to the beat of her own drum machine, rewriting the rules of songwriting, production, and performance with every release 🎶

We first had the pleasure of working with her in 1980 during the recording of ‘Never for Ever’. Over the following years, she returned to Abbey Road to create parts of The Dreaming and Hounds of Love in Studio Two - two albums that redefined what pop music could be. And in 1981, she brought her visionary world to Studio One to film the iconic video for ‘Sat in Your Lap’.

From her iconic ethereal vocals to pioneering studio experimentation, her fearless artistry continues to inspire generations of musicians and producers ✨

Here’s to the magic she’s gifted the world, and to many more spins around the sun 🎉

The most famous recording studio in the world...

Abbey Road Studios has been at the forefront of music creativity since Sir Edward Elgar’s inaugural performance back in 1931. An awe-inspiring location, popular with leading orchestras and artists including Florence and the Machine, Kanye West and Adele, Abbey Road has hosted many landmark recordings and technological breakthroughs.

The most famous, and oldest, purpose built recording studio in the world, Abbey Road is of course synonymous with The Beatles, but its unparalleled history spans the invention of stereo and the wild experiments of Pink Floyd to the creation of film scores for movies including Star Wars and Skyfall. Abbey Road was declared an English Heritage Grade II listed site in 2010, but the focus continues to be on the future and helping to spread the expertise and knowledge present within the building to a new generation of musicians, engineers and producers around the world.
