B) “Tell me more about your experience—I want to understand.”
C) “You’re super articulate for someone from [X country]!”

Ay Ya Yai! Miss Lou: Voice of the Jamaican People by Tania Hernandez is the latest release from Mixed Heritage Press. Readers are often the best at describing a book, so here’s a lovely first review from Amazon, where you can purchase your copy:

"Ay Ya Yai: Miss Lou, Voice of the Jamaican People is a beautifully crafted book that pays homage to the life, legacy, and indomitable spirit of Miss Lou—Jamaica’s beloved cultural ambassador. Through its engaging narrative and stunning illustrations, this book not only captures the essence of Miss Lou’s humor, wit, and wisdom but also highlights her profound contributions to Jamaican language, identity, and folklore.

The writing flows with authenticity, echoing Miss Lou’s voice in a way that feels both educational and entertaining. It emphasizes her courage in promoting Patois as a legitimate expression of the Jamaican soul, bringing to life the music and rhythm of her words. Whether you are familiar with her poetry or learning about Miss Lou for the first time, the book offers readers a fresh appreciation for how she inspired national pride and global recognition of Jamaican culture.

What makes this book truly special is its emotional resonance. It invites readers to celebrate Miss Lou’s humor and intellect while reflecting on the impact she had on shaping modern Jamaica. The illustrations complement the storytelling perfectly, making it accessible for readers of all ages.

Ay Ya Yai is not just a book—it’s a celebration. A tribute to the power of language, humor, and heritage, and a must-read for anyone interested in the richness of Jamaican history and the life of one of its brightest stars. Highly recommended!"

Writing poetry can be therapy, art, and science all at once. It certainly is all those things to me.

I've just returned from the exceptional "On the Vastness of our Identities," an exhibition curated by Verdiana Albano, founder of Institute Contemporary. I feel honored to have been selected as the writer for this remarkable project and to collaborate with four talented visual artists.

The exhibition, which explores travel, migration, mixed heritage, and the diversity of Afropean landscapes and identities, runs until September 29 in Arles, South of France!

If you need support publishing a poetry book, please email [email protected]. I am a book coach with extensive experience editing and publishing poetry books and works. I'd love to help.

June is officially Caribbean Read Month, the perfect time to celebrate the Caribbean's rich and diverse literary heritage. Before it ends, let me highlight two books published by our authors last year.

The first is Beyond My Smile: Rising Above Rejection by Delvon Campbell, an American Jamaican author. This memoir documents Campbell's challenging journey from Jamaica to America, celebrating triumph over child abandonment while inspiring readers to persevere and keep smiling through life's challenges.

The second is The House in the Middle by British Bajan author Kerry Waterman. This Caribbean short story celebrates growing up in Barbados with limited resources yet flourishing through love, discipline, and determination, ultimately providing a stronger and more resilient foundation than material possessions.

Don't miss out on these compelling reads, available on Amazon worldwide.

And if you need expert support on your book writing or publishing journey, don't hesitate to contact [email protected].

Let's celebrate your work the next time around. 😊
