“When TV screens go dark, smartphones light up in Ukraine.”⁣

Tania Nikitina, Senior Research Manager at BBC Media Action, recently spoke at the 2025 ASI International TV & Video Conference in Copenhagen about how war in Ukraine rapidly changed media habits, highlighting the importance of audience measurement, especially in wartime.⁣

“Before the war, measurement in Ukraine — like everywhere — meant market currency and audience insight…Today, it also means national security.”⁣

While some audience insights are still captured in Ukraine, new approaches are urgently needed to keep pace with the ever-changing media landscape and population’s media habits – in urban centres and rural areas.⁣

“To counter disinformation and advance information integrity, we must understand our audiences – every day, across platforms, across devices.”⁣

In stable markets, change takes years. In Ukraine, urgency accelerates the need for innovation and speed.⁣

BBC Media Action is exploring ways to support this transformation.⁣

"120 km/h winds moving west" doesn’t tell people how to protect their homes. As extreme weather events become increasingly frequent, clear information isn’t always reaching the people who need it most.

Our Bridges project is building climate resilience through strengthened communication. As part of the project, researchers have carried out surveys and focus group discussions with participants from both urban and rural areas and conducted in-depth interviews with media and WCIS practitioners to understand how people access weather and climate information. The findings are helping media professionals turn complex climate data into actionable alerts, to help communities prepare, adapt, and stay safe.

We're thrilled to celebrate our team in India winning two Anthem Awards for their behaviour change campaign - a gold award in the Sustainability, Environment, and Climate category and a silver award in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion category.

“Let’s change the story because when you restore dignity, you don’t just shift perception, you shift power”, said the team.

The campaign, in collaboration with Saamuhika Shakti, is part of the initiative in Bengaluru, encouraging people to empty, rinse, and dry disposable food containers before placing them in the dry waste bin.

has touched hearts and inspired action, with 60% of those exposed now rinsing containers, leading to cleaner materials for waste pickers to dispose of and less waste heading to landfills.

This is a tribute to the in Bengaluru, highlighting their essential contributions to the waste value chain - and to the power of media and communication to drive change.

We’re excited to celebrate our team in Ukraine winning a silver award in the 2025 Anthem Awards for their Notice the Changes campaign in the Humanitarian Action & Services Category. ⁣

“We at BBC Media Action know when darkness falls, trusted information brings light”, said the team. ⁣

The campaign included billboards, public service announcements, social media content and a powerful mini-documentary called My Land. ⁣

Maria Radchenko, a mine detection instructor and canine handler, has checked nearly 200,000 square metres of land with her dog, Zmaj, over the past year. ⁣

But with over 23% of Ukrainian territory left potentially contaminated with mines by the Russian invasion, the threat of explosive ordnance (EO) for Ukrainians is very high. ⁣

Improving public awareness and encouraging safe decision-making about explosive devices is crucial. ⁣

BBC Media Action worked in partnership with UNDP and Humanity & Inclusion to study behaviour around and perception of EO in Ukraine and developed the campaign in cooperation with SESU (State Emergency Service of Ukraine) and Two More Rows.

This research informed future communication to help protect people against these explosive remnants of war. ⁣

Young urbanites in Indonesia are growing up in the digital world and have the potential to be a powerful force for change.

However, forests and climate issues often seem distant from their urban lives.

Kembali Ke Hutan, or Return to the Forest, was designed to close those gaps and spark discussion and action, taking our audience on a journey.

We created three different brands across television and social media platforms.

The project reached 24.5 million people, with 65% of viewers taking action after watching our programming.

🔥“A lot happened before the fire got to us...Why didn’t we know?"

When a forest fire tore through Ain Draham, Tunisia, Shams and Yasmina had no warning — no alerts, no information.

Hundreds were displaced and livelihoods destroyed. In a changing climate, access to accurate, trusted information can save lives.

“If we had got the information in advance… we could have helped better”, says boat rescuer Imed.

BBC Media Action’s WISER project supports journalists, broadcasters, and local communities across North Africa to strengthen early warning systems and improve communication before disasters strike.

Together, we can build resilience — one story, one broadcast, one community at a time. 💬

BBC Media Action is proud to be part of this initiative with Madubi (Mirror), a Hausa-language radio drama in northern Nigeria, tackling the stigma and discrimination faced by people with disabilities - and their rights to access sexual and reproductive healthcare.

We're talking about our work with Madubi and how we’re breaking down barriers with Sightsavers at the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) in Bogotá, Colombia this week.
