The Junior Lawyers Division will be meeting with the SRA to find out how they plan to rectify the marking error that resulted in 175 students being wrongly failed in their qualifying examinations. The number of ‘computer’ related failures we are seeing in the law is disturbing.

For those of us who work in the law and necessarily place implicit trust in our British-based common law justice systems, The Post Office Horizon IT scandal presents daily shock. Each day, each revelation, is more devastating, more incredulous. 'How could it have all happened, and continued unabated for so long?' is a question that will perhaps never be answered. I have worked for many years in in oral history, archival research and exhibition-making as a means of historical revision, truth-telling and social healing. I can only applaud the efforts of the In Your Own Words project that seeks to gather the personal testimonies of those impacted by this terrible human tragedy. Together with the full scale public Inquiry led by retired high court judge Sir Wyn Williams, this Legacy Project will help to ensure that the failures that led to this tragedy should not ever happen again. As an elected member of the Law Society Council, I can assure you that the Law Society is working hard to fully understand what went wrong and how the profession must evolve to address these failings.

I was privileged to contribute to the 2024 Law Society Strategic Planning Event held on Tuesday 27 February as elected member for North East London. Together law society member reps, executive board and staff worked to establish aims and objectives for the coming year and determine how best to allocate resources to achieve targets. The legal profession is a significant contributor to the economy with £56 billion gross value added in 2021. The jurisdiction and choice of law remain first worldwide. Maintaining the strength of the legal profession and the independence of the judiciary in the face of growing international competition are paramount. Concerns expressed by members include work-life balance, women exiting the profession PQE 7-8 years, AI & tech integration and effectively training newly qualified solicitors. I raised the issue of Access to Justice. Guaranteeing that the public has access to legal services regardless of income is paramount for a well functioning democracy and respect for law as well as a professional ethical duty. This is a top priority for the Society and I am happy to share that these issues are being directly addressed in the 21st Century Justice Project. Thank you especially to everyone at the Law Society, staff especially, for pulling together to make for such a productive day! hashtag

Delighted to announce that I have been elected to the North East London constituency seat of the council of the Law Society of England and Wales. Thank you to everyone who voted! The first major issue on the table are the proposals to move regulation of CILEX lawyers, paralegals and other specialist legal professionals to the SRA. Are the proposals sound? I am very keen to learn your views on this crucial matter. Full details of the proposals and consultations have been made available in the Law Society Gazette. https://lnkd.in/eAvN-uhY
