Happy Lunar New Year's Eve! 🎉

Today marks the beginning of a week-long public holiday for many East Asian countries, with more than 2 billion people expected to be celebrating the Lunar New Year. Anticipation will be creeping in as the big night approaches.

Dragons Teaching are excited to be working with several schools this week on Chinese New Year workshops - mini enrichment programmes which give pupils an introduction to Mandarin while increasing cultural awareness.

The start of a new lunar year is marked by a fantastical legend in Chinese culture. According to the ancient legend of Chu Xi (meaning 'new year's eve'), a monster called 'Nian' used to terrorise a village on the dark winter's night every year 👹

In order to save their children and their livelihoods, villagers adopted certain customs - such as launching firecrackers and lighting lanterns - to drive the monster away. These customs have evolved into the modern Chinese New Year celebrations which will be observed next Monday night! 🎆

Next Tuesday marks the beginning of the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese Lunar Calendar - specifically, the Water Tiger. While most people tend to be aware of the 12 animals of the Zodiac, fewer know about the cycle of five elements - wood, fire, earth, metal and water - which create a 60-year cycle. This means the last Year of the Water Tiger was 1962!

So where does the mythology behind the Chinese Zodiac come from, and what characteristics are associated with the year of your birth?
