Trump's vanity and ego knows no bounds. For America, there couldn't have been a worse person to be in charge of the nation in the year it celebrates its 250th anniversary of independence.

Writing in the Guardian in response, Streeting criticised Trump and said Britain "must have the confidence to act independently."

He also called out Britain's involvement in Iraq in a thinly-veiled swipe at Blair.
