SIMPLY THE BEST LONDON - Coverage of the American Dream: pop to the present at the British Museum
www.SimplytheBest-London.tv

The American Dream, a dream of two tales. Shiny confidence but also disillusionment. The American Dream exhibition begins in the 1960s when artists including Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns began experimenting with printmaking. A process that allows easy reproduction and was perfectly suited to an era of mass media, mass production, mass consumerism and the threat of mass destruction.

This powerful show explores the innovative techniques and unprecedented scale, boldness and ambition that made printmaking an ideal expression of America’s power and influence. This medium also addressed contemporary social issues such as race, AIDS and feminism.

The exhibition traces the creative momentum of American art over six decades - from the moment pop art burst onto the New York and West Coast scenes in the early 1960’s, through the rise of minimalism, conceptual art and photorealism in the 1970’s to the works of living artists today.

ART EXPLAINED | David Hockney Billy + Audrey Wilder Polaroid Composite 1982 at Tate Britain.
Coverage by Sarah Phillips, Lecturer Art History and Visual Culture.
www.SimplytheBest-London.tv

British living-legend artist David Hockney used Polaroid film to create gridded multifaceted images that encourage the eye to experience each subject as it builds from its fragments of different viewpoints. Collages assembled from these borderless photographs allowed him to better approximate the complicated, multiple viewpoints for which he had been striving. Through photography, Hockney revisited motifs and subjects used for his painting, from portraits and encounters to landscape and still life.

Tate Modern's major exhibition of the work of Robert Rauschenberg (1925 - 2008), organised in collaboration with MoMa in New York, will be the first posthumous retrospective and the most comprehensive survey of the artist's work for 20 years.

Robert Rauschenberg was an American painter and graphic artist whose early works anticipated the Pop Art movement. Rauschenberg is well known for his "Combines" of the 1950's, in which non-traditional materials and objects were employed in innovative combinations.

Rauschenberg was both a painter and a sculptor and the Combines are a combinations of both. He also worked with photography, printmaking, paper making and performance.
