Ever wondered why gingerbread men don’t wear chocolate trousers? 🍪👖

It turns out HMRC has some very bizarre VAT rules when it comes to baked goods!
If a gingerbread man only has chocolate dots for eyes, HMRC treats it as “de minimis” (less than 1% chocolate coverage), so it’s zero-rated for VAT. But the moment you add chocolate trousers or coat more than 1% of the biscuit, it suddenly becomes a luxury item subject to 20% VAT.
Meanwhile, a chocolate bourbon isn’t subject to VAT because the chocolate is inside the biscuit rather than coating the outside!

UK tax law is full of weird quirks, which crazy VAT rule surprised you the most? Drop it in the comments! 👇

Is the UK overtaxing labour while double-taxing assets? 💸

There’s a major debate right now around wealth tax and capital gains tax versus income tax. But here’s what most people forget: most assets are bought with money that’s already been taxed!

Taxing those assets heavily again means double taxation. If policy decisions align to push aggressive wealth and capital taxes without addressing the practical realities, it’s going to trigger a mass exodus of wealth and talent from the UK.

It’s not just the non-dom changes, heavy asset taxation is what will truly drive people away.

What’s your take? Should assets be taxed as heavily as income? Let’s talk in the comments! 👇

Andy Burnham announced a tax cut to save you on your electricity bills... but will £45 a year actually help? 💡🤔
The government is removing VAT on domestic electricity bills to reduce average household costs by around £45 a year.
While every penny counts in a cost-of-living crisis and we’re grateful for the gesture, saving less than £4 a month isn’t going to solve the underlying financial pressures families and business owners are facing.
Is a £45 annual tax cut enough to make a difference in your household, or is it just symbolic? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! 👇

STOP panic selling your properties or making major business decisions based on headlines! 🛑🏠

With political changes, a new Prime Minister, and a new Chancellor in place, everyone is speculating about what’s next. But what has actually changed right now? Nothing yet.
The real policy changes won’t happen until the Autumn Budget.

Don’t let sensationalized headlines push you into knee-jerk reactions like selling off your portfolio or liquidating your business. Be proactive in planning for potential tax shifts, but remain reactive only when official laws and policies are actually passed. Stay calm, make rational decisions, and consult your accountant! 📉👇

“If we didn’t trick the ambulance priority system, my grandfather wouldn’t be here today.” 🚨

In this candid clip from Everyday Empires, Rohit shares a deeply personal experience of navigating the NHS during a life-or-death family emergency- and why the social contract of taxes feels increasingly broken.

When citizens pay taxes as part of a “social contract,” the core expectation is basic protection: safety, functioning infrastructure, and emergency healthcare when lives are on the line.
In this segment, Rohit and Natalie discuss the real-world friction of living under a high-tax system with failing public services:

The Social Contract: Understanding tax as a transaction for safety, health, and basic services rather than just an obligation.

A Moral Dilemma: Having to manipulate emergency ambulance priorities just to get immediate medical attention for a dying family member.

The NHS Paradox: Incredible care from healthcare workers once they arrive, but a deeply flawed, overloaded system that forces families into desperate problem-solving.

In this candid clip from Everyday Empires, Natalie calls out the stark reality of living under the UK tax burden- and why keeping her family in the system felt like failing her kids.

When you pay into a system, it should feel like an investment in your family’s future and safety. But when tax pounds don’t translate into basic public services, it stops feeling like a contribution and starts feeling like a waste.

In this segment, Natalie breaks down the frustrating reality of the UK tax system:

The Mother’s Responsibility: Wanting to give her children the best opportunities in life, but feeling constrained by the current state of the UK.

Failing Public Services: Facing 12-hour A&E waits, delayed emergency response times, under-policed streets, and unmaintained roads despite paying road tax.

The 40% Inheritance Tax Trap: Why double-taxation on generational wealth feels completely counterproductive for hard-working parents building a legacy for their children.

In this eye-opening clip from the Everyday Empires Podcast, ._ opens up about why she lost faith in the UK health system, and how her experience in Dubai completely changed her perspective.

Forget the Hollywood myth of the sudden “eureka” moment. Truly impactful business ideas don’t just flash into your mind perfectly formed-and they certainly aren’t easy to build.

In this clip, Rohit and Max (Founder of ) pull back the curtain on how real business concepts emerge. It isn’t a single spark; it’s a messy process of spotting gaps, questioning assumptions, and grinding through the brutal planning phase that follows.

The idea is just 1%. The framework you build next is what determines your survival.

Adversity doesn’t just test your character; it completely audits your decision-making process.
Stepping into a leadership role unexpectedly forces a massive realisation: you can’t rely on historical knowledge you don’t possess. Instead, you have to build a reliable framework from scratch while the business is already running.
The end of this clip from our podcast touches on something fundamental for anyone navigating a crisis: Your process dictates your outcome. When the stakes are high and you are operating with limited information:
Prioritise the immediate constants: Protect the core team, the family, and the immediate commitments.
Strip away the noise: Focus purely on what needs to be done today, rather than trying to fix the next six months all at once.
Refine the decision-making engine: The way you evaluate risk and make choices under pressure becomes the bedrock of the company’s new chapter.
Hard times demand structure, not just effort.
