"On the night of the massacre, I was giving my daughter a bath. I heard a sound. I saw someone with an axe. He killed her and her head rolled down the street. I woke my children and ran. A bullet went through my eye and out through my head.”

Photo 2: Ed Kashi - Children play around an impromptu bonfire in The Fountain, a Loyalist housing estate in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, 1989.

Photo 3: J A Mortram - I haven’t got a future. I don’t expect to be around too much longer, so I just don’t think about my future at all. That’s a strange thing to say, I know, but it’s how I feel. When Mother died, that was as bad a blow as losing my sight, if not worse.

Photo 4: Jacky Chapman - On the edges of the camp, families displaced from Khaldeh made homes near the stadium in ‘permanent tents’ of stone and plastic.

Photo 5: Joel Goodman - In August 2024, the area of Manvers, a suburb of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, became the focus of national attention after violent disorder erupted outside a hotel housing asylum seekers.

Photo 6: Wayne Tippetts - On an August Bank Holiday Monday in 1992, I was sent on assignment, to Watford Gap Services for the Weekend Guardian supplement, with journalist Jan Moir.

Photo 7: David Sinclair - Cantril Farm, Liverpool.
