Algeria cuts diplomatic ties with UAE and expels ambassador

Algeria has severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates and ordered its ambassador to leave the country within 48 hours.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry announced the decision today, accusing Abu Dhabi of repeated “provocative or hostile” actions and saying Algeria had exhausted all efforts to preserve bilateral relations.

Algeria has not publicly detailed the specific actions that triggered the rupture, while Abu Dhabi has yet to issue an official response.

Relations between Algeria and the UAE have deteriorated significantly in recent years over competing regional interests, including Morocco, Western Sahara, the Sahel and Israel.

Algiers has been particularly critical of the UAE’s close relationship with neighbouring Morocco and Abu Dhabi’s support for Rabat’s claim over Western Sahara. Algeria backs the Polisario Front and supports Palestinian style self determination for the disputed territory.

Another major source of friction has been normalisation with Israel. The UAE established diplomatic relations with Israel under the US brokered Abraham Accords in 2020, while Morocco followed shortly afterwards. Algeria has remained one of the region’s strongest opponents of normalisation and has repeatedly expressed concern over Israel’s growing political, military and security ties with Morocco.

Fighting between Saudi Arabia and Houthi-led forces in northern Yemen has escalated into a full-blown conflict, as rival forces clash across the embattled Arab country.

Saudi-backed forces have claimed some victories on the northern border, but last night Yemeni forces captured key areas on the al-Mandab west coast, including Mocha city.

Saudi Arabia has bombed numerous targets across the country, but Yemen's Houthi group has responded with deep strikes inside Saudi territory.

The Houthi gains have raised alarm bells, as they provide the group with greater control of the key shipping route - the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

A large pro-Palestinian protest was held in Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, last night, against the opening of the Israel embassy.

A large banner read: “No collaboration with the state of Israel. Not in our name.”

Slovenia has historically been one of Europe's most pro Palestine nations, but the election of a new right wing government earlier this year has reversed previous anti Israel policies.

INDIA: An elderly Muslim man was humiliated by Bajrang Dal, a Hindutva organisation, in Jamner, Madhya Pradesh, after being accused of kicking a cow.

The man was forced to rub his nose before the cow, prostrate himself and touch its feet as an apology.

Across different states, Hindutva organisations have continued to carry out attacks and public humiliation of Muslims, often in the name of cow protection.

Critics have accused the authorities and police of failing to take effective action, while alleging that such groups enjoy political backing and protection under India’s current ruling government.

Anthropic researcher puts risk of AI killing all humans within a decade at over 10%

A senior safety researcher at Anthropic has estimated the odds of AI killing all humans at over 10% within the next decade, publicly backing a colleague who quit the company warning it was "gambling with our lives."

Evan Hubinger, who leads Alignment Science at Anthropic, responded on X to the resignation post of fellow researcher Jacob Coxon, who left saying Anthropic and rival OpenAI were racing toward self-improving superintelligence without adequate safeguards.

Coxon added that AI labs are “gambling with our lives.”

"Jacob is correct here — we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans," Hubinger wrote. "I personally think it is 10% within the next decade."

Far-right activist Danny Tommo was filmed ranting and raving outside The Daily Mail’s head office following the release of a news article that explored the controversial figure’s personal background.

Visibly upset and close to tears at one point, Tommo demanded that the Daily Mail remove details about his mother from the article within 48 hours, or he will continue to show up outside the building with masked men.

His anger at the online paper was over a journalist questioning his mother at her home address about her son's controversial activities.

Danny Tommo is a former convict who has hit the headlines for organising far right protests which have targeted Dover port and Portsmouth.
