D is for donations and damage 🛍️

Take it from a charity shop volunteer- sadly, donations that’s can’t be sold are a waste of our time and resources.

If you wouldn’t give it to a friend in its current state, then it’s better to recycle it.

Dirty and spoiled items or things that are broken beyond repair just slow us down and cost us money to have taken away.

I think damage (or lack there of) is a personal preference. I’m not handy at all so I only shop things that I can wear or use immediately.

But there are so many amazing DIYers or clever sewers who can rescue damaged pieces and make them good as new.

You just have to decide which one of them you are!

Because buying things with potential and then not fixing them up and resonating them is a false economy for you - charity starts at home right!

What’s your take on donations? Do you volunteer??

And are you a fixer upper or do you need things to be near perfect, like me??

See you for part 5, E for…. (Thrifting) Etiquette

The secret’s out…

Simple but true.

Hardly a day goes by when I don’t pop in to a charity shop 😅

Need some milk?

Stuck in traffic?

Got 5 mins to kill before you have to be somewhere?

These are the moments I lean on the most during the week when I can squeeze some thrift time in.

And you know what? It’s often these opportunistic moments that pay off because I have just a little time and no expectation.

Shelves and rails are being restocked all day long so use that optimistic mindset to pop in whenever you can and see how you can up your game.

How often do you go thrifting? Lemme know!

I mean…… 🫣😂

Maybe the staff didn’t know what it was??!

Would you have told them?

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen donated? Can you beat a 🍁pipe?!

Let me know I’m not the only one finding random stuff 😄

A carboot sale is just about my favourite way to spend a summer Sunday, which is why I chose it as C in my A-Z of Thrifting series.

My top tips for having the best time are:

1) Get there early

2) Always take cash. 99% of sellers will only be dealing in cash

3) Be prepared to rummage and get your hands dirty

4) Bundle up where possible

5) Take your own bag and packing materials

6) Reeeeally check for flaws

7) Rapport is everything

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever found at a carboot sale??

Let me know!

More often than not these days, I don’t look for labels. I let my hands do the thrifting.

Let me explain…

I walk down a rail and just… feel everything.
Not dramatically — just a quick brush with my fingers.

And certain fabrics betray themselves instantly. 🖐🏼

✨ Cashmere: soft in a way that almost melts.
✨ Wool: springy, warm, and a bit textured.
✨ Silk: cool, soft and light, like water
✨ Cotton: sturdy with weight.
✨ Linen: crisp but softens as it warms in your hand.

Then there’s the “nope” pile:

Scratchy acrylic, thin polyester, that shiny, staticky fabric that zaps you — you know the one.

It takes about 10 seconds to know if a rail is worth your time.

✨Pro tip - hold fabric up to the light - acrylic knits look shiny, while light colour linen should give a lovely muted light 👌🏼

Try it on your next thrift and tell me if your hands start finding gems you’d have walked straight past before. 👇🏼

Because when you rush, you only see the surface.

The magic is in the details — the things most people skim past:

🧵 Seams that show real craftsmanship (or not 👀)

✨ Linings that reveal whether it’s built to last

🏷️ Labels that tell you if it’s quality fabric or just fast fashion in disguise

🪞 In homeware, it’s checking the weight, finish, and materials — is it solid wood or just veneer? Is that glass, or plastic pretending to be?

If you don’t slow down, you’ll miss the very signs that separate a forever piece from a waste of money.

That’s why I take my time — I’d rather leave with one incredible find than a bag full of meh.

Follow for thrifting secrets that’ll change the way you shop secondhand. 😉
