Session 5 Takeaway: End-User Industries Outlook
Steel demand has been soft due to slow end-user activity, high interest rates, geopolitical uncertainty, and strong Chinese competition, particularly in EVs. While India shows growth, subdued spending in the EU and US continues to weigh on the market.

The session covered sector-specific demand trends, impacts of Chinese competition and supply chain disruptions on automotive output, potential trade defence measures, sustainability-driven procurement, and opportunities from rising defence spending.

UK-listed developer has confirmed it is moving its project to the due to better support prospects, Kallanish reports.

The Saltend refinery was planned with a production capacity of 12,500 tonnes/year of rare earth products, including 4,500-5,000 t/y of neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) oxides. It would process feedstock mined at its Longonjo mine in Angola. Commercial operation was expected in 2024.

Session 4 Takeaway: Flat Steel Trade & Supply Chains
Overcapacity and weak demand have pushed Chinese steel exports to record highs, displacing regional production and intensifying global trade tensions. A surge in trade cases, ongoing US tariffs, and the erosion of WTO-led rules are reshaping trade flows.

The session discussed how importers are adapting to new trade barriers, the growing use of “melted and poured” clauses, China’s circumvention risks, the impact of CBAM on EU imports, and how US policies are driving trade diversion.

Session 3 Takeaway: Flat Steel Technology & Diversification Amid Decarbonisation
The path to low-carbon steel is driving massive investment in new technologies, from EAFs and DRI to hydrogen-based solutions. Equipment suppliers are adapting fast, but questions remain around whether flat steel made via DRI-EAF routes can match blast furnace quality. Access to high-grade ore and scrap will be key.

The session explored advances in hydrogen-ready technologies, EAF quality potential, scrap processing, thin slab casting, and the evolving partnerships between steelmakers and technology suppliers.

Session 2 Takeaway: Raw Materials Sourcing
With iron ore quality declining and high-grade scrap in short supply, steelmakers are rethinking sourcing strategies. Resource nationalism, energy price volatility, and rising sustainability expectations are reshaping procurement decisions.

The session covered how mills are addressing ore quality issues, increasing use of scrap and ore-based metallics, securing energy supply, and integrating sustainability into raw material sourcing.

🌍 Global Flat Steel 2025 kicks off!

Session 1: Keynote Takeaway: Global Steel Trends in an Era of Unpredictability
Global steel demand is slowing while overcapacity rises, driven by new high-emission investments in Asia. Record Chinese exports and US tariffs are reshaping trade flows, as geopolitical fragmentation challenges global cooperation. At the same time, the industry faces mounting pressure, and cost to decarbonise.

The session explored the macroeconomic outlook, trade disruptions, and how steelmakers are responding to CBAM and new regional demand trends.

Indian steel export strategy pivots amid CBAM, quota uncertainty
India’s steel exporters are recalibrating trade strategies amid evolving global policy frameworks and weakening European demand. Uncertainty surrounding the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) benchmarks and the European Commission’s (EC) recently proposed safeguard quota measures continues to cloud the trade outlook.

At the same time, Brussels and New Delhi are deepening policy coordination to align India’s emerging carbon market with EU standards. A move that market sources say could eventually soften CBAM’s financial impact on Indian exporters.
