JetBrains 2024.3 release elevates the developer experience
JetBrains has a series of enhancements across its product offerings with the 2024.3 release, providing developers with a more refined experience.

The company’s IDEs are now equipped with the ability to reveal the logical structure of code, thereby aiding developers in grasping projects comprehensively. This update streamlines the debugging of Kubernetes applications and offers extensive cluster-wide access to Kubernetes logs. In addition, the official release of the K2 mode – previously in Beta – marks an upgrade in code analysis stability, memory consumption, and the overall performance of the IDEs.

The JetBrains AI Assistant 2024.3 introduces added versatility by integrating Google Gemini models, including Gemini 1.5 Pro 002 and Flash 002, into the large language model (LLM) lineup. Users can now personalise their AI interaction by selecting between Gemini, OpenAI, or local models via Ollama.

This latest release also debuts advanced code completion using JetBrains’ in-house Mellum model, enhanced context management, and inline prompt generation directly in the editor—features all designed to streamline the development process.

Beyond these core improvements, each JetBrains IDE brings its own set of new features:

IntelliJ IDEA 2024.3 sees enhancements such as improved alias handling in the data flow engine for Java and Kotlin, plus a code formatter that maintains blank lines for clearer readability. It now supports features from Kotlin 2.1 and offers named tuples in Scala 3. The ability to run multiple configurations simultaneously, a new default tab limit of 30, and improved UI elements like terminal usage and project compilation speed have also been introduced. Further additions include a heap memory graph in the profiler, direct environment variable access in the HTTP Client, and enhanced Docker Compose support.
PyCharm 2024.3 brings AI straight into the editor; users can type natural language prompts to receive suggestions. Additionally, it offers code assistance for custom data classes, such as attribute code completion and constructor type inference. Performance evaluations are improved with the new flame graphs in the profiler.
WebStorm 2024.3 focuses on refining existing features and improving navigation, renaming framework components, built-in database tools, and SQL support. It also enhances AI-driven code completion.
GoLand 2024.3 improves developer workflows with new inspections, refined multiline completion, inline prompts, and upgraded support for the latest Go language features with better startup performance for large projects.
CLion 2024.3 brings the Nova language engine packed with sought-after features for embedded development, an OpenCV image viewer, and tools for debugging such as native Zephyr West support.
Rider 2024.3 expands its support to PlayStation 5 and Xbox console game development, introduces compatibility with the new .NET 9 SDK, and includes debugging enhancements for Unity projects.
PhpStorm 2024.3 aids developers in transitioning to PHP 8.4, offering support for xdebug_notify(), Pest 3.0, and improvements in testing.
RubyMine 2024.3 debuts Rails 8 support, improved cloud-based code completion, and updates for Ruby 3.4, packaged with advancements like inline AI prompts and better test generation.

Google has debuted the first Android 16 Developer Preview, offering developers an early look at the next major version of its OS.

Designed exclusively for developers, this initial release enables early development, testing, and the collection of feedback. As to be expected with preliminary builds, the Android system and the apps running on this version may not always function as intended.

System changes and app compatibility
Android 16, similar to its predecessors, introduces several system changes. Developers may experience impacts ranging from minor glitches to notable limitations until their apps are updated to be compatible with the new version. While the majority of apps, APIs, and features should operate as expected, it is recommended that developers review all known issues to better understand potential challenges.

One key development in the Android 16 journey is Google’s commitment to more frequent API releases, aimed at accelerating innovation across apps and devices. This iteration marks the beginning of that commitment, with a planned major launch slated for Q2 2025.

This timeline adjustment from Q3 to Q2 seeks to better align with the ecosystem’s device launch schedules, ensuring more devices receive the update sooner. Consequently, developers need to carry out annual compatibility testing a few months earlier than previous years.

In addition to the major release, a minor rollout is expected in Q4 of 2025, including new developer APIs, feature updates, optimisations, and bug fixes—sans any app-impacting behaviour changes. Google will uphold quarterly Android releases, with Q1 and Q3 updates bringing incremental quality improvements.

JetBrains launches 2024.1 with local AI code completion
JetBrains has released the 2024.1 updates for its IDEs with several major new features, headlined by full-line code autocompletion powered by local AI models.

The new full-line code completion functionality ensures code suggestions are processed entirely on the user’s device, minimising latency and providing a seamless offline experience.

“We’ve developed models that run directly on your device, and the IDE verifies each suggestion,” explained Mikhail Kostyukov, Product Manager in JetBrains Machine Learning Team. “This approach delivers the best user experience and ensures that the generated code never contains non-existent variables or methods.”

JetBrains’ local AI code completion provides an alternative to cloud-based offerings like GitHub’s Copilot, which has raised concerns around privacy and intellectual property. By running models directly on the user’s machine, JetBrains aims to address those issues for developers in regulated industries or security-conscious environments.

Full-line code completion comes included with existing paid JetBrains IDE subscriptions for Java, Kotlin, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, CSS, PHP, Go, and Ruby. Support for C #, Rust, and C++ will be added in the coming months across relevant IDEs like Rider, RustRover, CLion Nova, and others.

In addition to the local AI capabilities, the 2024.1 releases introduce an overhauled terminal with visual enhancements, command completion, better navigation of nested commands, and easy access to history. Remote development also sees performance and stability improvements along with expanded technology support.
