JetBrains 2024.3 release elevates the developer experience

JetBrains has a series of enhancements across its product offerings with the 2024.3 release, providing developers with a more refined experience.

The company’s IDEs are now equipped with the ability to reveal the logical structure of code, thereby aiding developers in grasping projects comprehensively. This update streamlines the debugging of Kubernetes applications and offers extensive cluster-wide access to Kubernetes logs. In addition, the official release of the K2 mode – previously in Beta – marks an upgrade in code analysis stability, memory consumption, and the overall performance of the IDEs.

The JetBrains AI Assistant 2024.3 introduces added versatility by integrating Google Gemini models, including Gemini 1.5 Pro 002 and Flash 002, into the large language model (LLM) lineup. Users can now personalise their AI interaction by selecting between Gemini, OpenAI, or local models via Ollama.

This latest release also debuts advanced code completion using JetBrains’ in-house Mellum model, enhanced context management, and inline prompt generation directly in the editor—features all designed to streamline the development process.

Developers get a better shot at App Store spotlight

Apple has rolled out “Featuring Nominations” within App Store Connect, giving developers a better shot at the App Store spotlight.

In an update on Apple’s developer site, the company wrote:

“Share your app or game’s upcoming content and enhancements for App Store featuring consideration with new Featuring Nominations in App Store Connect. Submit a nomination to tell our team about a new launch, in-app content, or added functionality. If you’re featured in select placements on the Today tab, you’ll also receive a notification via the App Store Connect app.

In addition, you can promote your app or game’s biggest moments — such as an app launch, new version, or select featuring placements on the App Store — with readymade marketing assets. Use the App Store Connect app to generate Apple-designed assets and share them to your social media channels. Include the provided link alongside your assets so people can easily download your app or game on the App Store.”

Previously, the selection for featuring in prominent app showcases relied entirely on Apple’s App Store editorial team. This new system allows developers to actively nominate their apps, updates, or new features for consideration, bypassing the wait and uncertainty of relying solely on editorial recognition.

Vulkan 1.4: Khronos mandates key graphics features

The Khronos Group has unveiled Vulkan 1.4, an update to its cross-platform 3D graphics and compute API that mandates support for numerous previously optional features.

The latest version integrates several proven capabilities into its core specification, marking a shift towards ensuring consistent functionality across different platforms whilst simplifying application development and deployment.

Geraint North, VP of Developer Platforms at Arm, said: “To meet growing consumer demand for premium mobile experiences, developers need the right tools to create more complex applications. The Vulkan 1.4 release represents a significant step forward, with new features translating to improved ease of use for developers.
