SAP empowers developers with generative AI capabilities

During its TechEd event, SAP made a series of announcements aimed at empowering developers with generative AI capabilities.

Juergen Mueller, CTO and member of the Executive Board of SAP, stressed the importance of adapting to the evolving technology and business environment.

“Today’s dynamic landscape demands every developer to be an AI developer,” Mueller affirmed. “The innovations we’re launching at SAP TechEd provide developers with the resources they need to transform the way businesses operate.”

SAP’s latest offering, SAP Build, facilitates effective collaboration between professional and citizen developers. These solutions, optimised for Java and JavaScript development, integrate AI-powered productivity tools. They also leverage SAP’s new generative AI co-pilot, Joule, enhancing productivity by embedding code generation capabilities for data models, application logic, and test script creation.

Recognising the foundational role of good data in AI, SAP HANA Cloud has introduced innovative vector database features to its multimodel offerings, at no extra cost. These features allow the management of unstructured data, like text, images, or audio, providing long-term memory and context to AI models.

Google releases Android 15 developer preview
Google has unveiled the initial developer preview of Android 15, showcasing a range of new features aimed at enhancing user privacy, refining advertising experiences, and improving overall device performance.

Dave Burke, Google’s Vice President of Engineering, says a core focus was on advancing user privacy while maintaining personalised advertising capabilities through the latest version of Privacy Sandbox on Android. This addition aims to strike a balance between protecting user privacy and delivering effective advertising tailored to individual preferences within mobile apps.

Among the notable features highlighted in the preview is the integration of Android 14 extensions – particularly around Health Connect – which expands support for various data types related to fitness, nutrition, and more.

Additionally, the introduction of partial screen sharing allows users to record specific windows instead of the entire screen—catering to the increasing demand for larger screen Android devices in various form factors such as tablets, foldables, and flippables.

Burke also outlined significant improvements in battery performance, including a power-efficiency mode for hint sessions, enhanced reporting of GPU and CPU work durations, and the implementation of thermal headroom thresholds to better manage thermal throttling.

Java remains backbone of enterprise applications

Java is set to remain the stable backbone of enterprise applications, according to a new report from Perforce Software.

The 2024 Java Developer Productivity Report is based on a survey of 440 respondents across 72 countries. Among the key findings, 60 percent of respondents said their companies plan to add Java developers in the coming year, while 42 percent plan to increase their Java development tool budgets.

“These investments in tools and talent are testament to Java’s role as the stable backbone of enterprise applications,” commented Rod Cope, Chief Technology Officer at Perforce.

Cloud migration driving Java’s continued prevalence
The survey reveals enterprises are rapidly adopting cloud technologies, with just 13 percent saying they don’t use any cloud providers. However, transitioning monolithic Java applications to take advantage of cloud’s benefits like increased agility can create friction around performance and deployment speeds.

42 percent of respondents said they have fully adopted microservices architectures to help solve these cloud deployment challenges. A further 45 percent are actively transitioning to microservices from monolithic app designs.

Concerns remain about microservices bloat, however, with 41 percent of respondents using 11 or more microservices—up significantly from 16 percent in 2021.
