Graphcore joins PyTorch Foundation as a general member
The PyTorch Foundation, a home for the deep learning community to collaborate on the open-source PyTorch framework and ecosystem, has announced that Graphcore is joining its ranks.

Graphcore – a Bristol, UK-based company specialising in designing and manufacturing AI accelerators, hardware, and software tailored for AI and machine learning workloads – has joined as a general member of the foundation.

PyTorch has long been a go-to framework for developers in the field of artificial intelligence, and this partnership with Graphcore marks a significant milestone for both entities.

Ibrahim Haddad, Executive Director of the PyTorch Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm:

“We’re thrilled that PyTorch is the leading framework for development on the Graphcore platform.

Graphcore has played an essential role in the hardware and open-source space, and we look forward to their continued contributions to PyTorch.”

One of the key ways Graphcore has contributed to the PyTorch ecosystem is by developing integrations to run on their IPU (Intelligence Processing Unit) hardware. These integrations empower researchers and practitioners to harness the power of their preferred frameworks while taking full advantage of Graphcore’s specialised hardware.

GitHub releases Blackbird code search engine

GitHub has released its reworked code search engine, Blackbird, which is built on Rust and promises faster and more comprehensive software repository exploration.

This revision, which has been in development for three years, is part of GitHub’s efforts to enhance text-based search techniques for code queries.

With Blackbird, developers can quickly search, navigate, and comprehend their code, contextualize critical information and ultimately increase productivity. Colin Merkel, a software engineer at GitHub, stated that the new code search and view are designed to enable developers to be more efficient.

Initially, GitHub used Apache Solr for code search before building a new search service using Elasticsearch in 2013.

Blackbird was developed in 2020, two years after Microsoft acquired the company, to enhance GitHub’s existing Elasticsearch cluster without expanding its resource demands. Blackbird was built from scratch in Rust because an off-the-shelf tool with the necessary capabilities did not exist.

Blackbird can manage up to 640 queries per second, compared to 0.01 queries per second for ripgrep, and can index at a rate of about 120,000 documents per second.

Apple launches a curriculum for schools teaching Swift
Apple has launched a curriculum for schools teaching app development using the company’s beloved Swift programming language.

Now available on the iBooks store, the ‘App Development with Swift’ curriculum is a full-year course designed by Apple’s engineers and educators which aims to help students get started with various elements of app design.

“We’ve seen firsthand the impact that coding has on individuals and the US economy as a whole. The app economy and software development are among the fastest-growing job sectors in America and we’re thrilled to be providing educators and students with the tools to learn coding,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Community colleges play a critical role in helping students achieve their dreams, and we hope these courses will open doors for people of all ages and backgrounds to pursue what they love.”

As part of the course, students will learn how to design and code full apps which provides valuable skills that can be expanded if students decide to pursue a career in Swift app development, or transferred to help when learning other languages if preferred.
