Epic Store debuts on EU iPhones
Epic Games has launched its own app store on iPhones in the EU. The launch comes in the wake of the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which has compelled Apple to open its platform to third-party app marketplaces.

EU iPhone users can now access the Epic Games Store by visiting Epic’s website on their devices, provided they are running iOS 17.4 or later. The store’s initial offering is limited, featuring Epic’s own titles such as Fortnite and Rocket League Sideswipe, with plans to expand the library through discussions with third-party mobile developers.

The return of Fortnite to iOS is particularly noteworthy, given the game’s tumultuous history with Apple. Removed from the App Store in 2020 due to a dispute over in-app purchase systems, Fortnite had previously generated over $700 million on iOS in just two years, with Apple taking a 30% cut amounting to more than $100 million.

Xbox backlash grows as developer claims ‘they don’t care’
However, Xbox players will have to wait – perhaps indefinitely – due to platform submission issues and what the developer claims is a lack of support from Microsoft.

Jacky Greco, CEO of Jyamma Games, the studio behind Enotria, said: “We’ve Xbox Series X/S version ready, but we can’t proceed with submission and release. I spent a lot of money porting and they decided to ignore us.”

Speaking to Insider Gaming, Greco elaborated that a bug had prevented Jyamma Games from opening its store page on Xbox and submitting the game. Initially, Microsoft was responsive but subsequently ceased communication.

Enotria’s predicament is not an isolated incident. A number of recent and upcoming titles have either skipped or delayed their Xbox launch for perplexing, and often frustrating, reasons.

Unity scraps its ‘Runtime Fee’ following developer backlash
Unity has announced the cancellation of its contentious ‘Runtime Fee’ for game developers. The decision comes after months of intense criticism from the gaming community.

Matt Bromberg, President and CEO of Unity, stated: “After deep consultation with our community, customers, and partners, we’ve made the decision to cancel the Runtime Fee for our games customers, effective immediately.”

The Runtime Fee, which would have charged developers based on game installations, sparked widespread outrage when announced in September. Many developers viewed it as a betrayal of Unity’s longstanding mission to democratise game development.

Acknowledging the damage to developer relations, Bromberg conceded: “We can’t pursue that mission in conflict with our customers; at its heart, it must be a partnership built on trust.”
