Paul McCartney gets labeled “granny music” sometimes. But if the isolated vocal on Golden Slumbers is “granny music” then your granny is cool af. Vulnerable one moment, thunderous the next. That kind of emotional range is not soft. It is power and nuance and emotional range.

Part 3 of my Mike Patton series.

Of course Mike Patton ended up making an Americana and folk rock record with The Avett Brothers. The project is AVTT/PTTN, and this is “Disappearing.”

It’s not surprising. Patton is a serious musician who keeps challenging himself, and his audience, while constantly trying things outside his comfort zone.

We can all learn something from Mike Patton. Think outside the box. Try something new. Stretch a little. See what happens.

Vocalist: a person who uses their voice as a musical instrument in performance, especially through singing or other controlled vocal expression such as rapping or chanting.

Zack de la Rocha is one of the most powerful vocalists of the whole 90s rock era.

Reposting one of my favorite rock and roll stories. During BBC Radio 5 Live, Rage Against the Machine were told not to rage against the machine. This is how that worked out.

I’ve come a long way since these older posts, and there’s a lot more coming. If you enjoy the work, follow, share, save, and consider supporting me directly through the link in my bio. It genuinely helps me keep building this.

Part 2 of my Mike Patton series.

His dynamic range as a hard rock singer is ridiculous. Power, range, control, tone, aggression, melody, he has mastery of it all. For someone who rose to prominence in the ’90s, I’m not sure any of his contemporaries were doing quite this much experimentation vocally.

One of my favorite Beatles songs ever. “Happiness Is a Warm Gun” goes through multiple musical personalities in just 2:43. And this section flips between 9/8 and 10/8. John Lennon was a genius. Happy September everyone.

Part 1 of my Mike MF’ing Patton series.

If we’re talking about the greatest vocalists of the ’90s, Mike Patton has to be in the conversation.

Melodic singing. Metal. Jazz. Lounge crooning. Beatboxing. Primal shrieks. Avant garde insanity. Ridiculous control. And that barely scratches the surface.

Patton joined Faith No More in 1988, and The Real Thing hit in 1989. The ’90s are where his creative range went completely feral.

This video was already 2 1/2 minutes, so I had to stop somewhere.

Follow me for more music dives like this, and hit the link in my bio if you want to support me making more of this s**t.

Stay tuned for Part 2. Mike Patton is nowhere near finished.

Songs that feature 9 for September the 9th month. What’s incredible about this polyrhythmic verse is how Danny Carey manages to mark the multiple time signatures in with his accents. What’s your favorite odd time groove? Let me know in the comments below.
