Meet Richard Sutcliffe
Richard has been attending Smerdon Day Service Resource CentreCentre for a number of Years.
Richard Sutcliffe was formally diagnosed with profound autism at the age of 3. Richard is a fascinating enigma as he has extraordinary natural creative talents. He began seriously drawing cartoons at the age of 7, creating a universe where he can be the central character with complete control over everyone else’s movements. He has placed himself within a lot of classic and original stories, making comics, cartoon strips and thousands of sequential drawings to make cartoon animations. Richard loves stop frame animations, particularly Wallace and Gromit, and is soon to start filming with all the models and scenery he has built from his own characters.
Unfortunately Richard experienced a catastrophe in November when his channel was deleted from YouTube. This was because overnight he uploaded 3 sections of his favorite DVD for others to enjoy as much as he did– he makes no profit from his channel and as his mental age is approximately 4 years, he has no appreciation of copyright issues. We appealed desperately to the solicitor representing the DVD involved to ask that he lift the complaint for 24 hours so we could delete the uploads and vowed to restrict Richard’s access so it could never happen again. Though the solicitor understood Richard’s profound disability, he absolutely refused to help in any way and demonstrated a distinct and very upsetting lack of empathy. Therefore we lost his channel with over a 100 cartoon animation films – this totalled more than 150,000 drawings made over 15 years and most importantly we lost all his followers and the lovely comments we have received over the years. Richard has had a very sad and tearful Christmas. We are asking all your friends and colleagues to subscribe. This would mean so much to him and his family and friends.
