1. Antihistamine - for allergies
Examples: Cetirizine or loratadine.
Useful for mild allergic reactions such as itching, hives, insect bites, hay fever, or mild reactions to foods.
2. Antimalarial medication - for malaria prevention
Examples: Atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone), doxycycline, or mefloquine.
If you're travelling to a malaria-risk area, including parts of Africa, you may need preventive medication.
3. Pain and fever relief
Examples: Paracetamol and, when appropriate, ibuprofen.
Paracetamol can help with headaches, fever, toothache and general aches and pains.
4. Heartburn/indigestion medication;
Examples: Gaviscon (alginate/antacid) or an antacid containing calcium carbonate; omeprazole may be appropriate for some people who already use it.
5. Diarrhea and dehydration supplies
Examples: Oral rehydration salts (ORS) and, for some adults, loperamide for short-term control of uncomplicated diarrhoea.
