At 19 years old, Roudha Al Mazrouei is one of the United Arab Emirates’ most promising young artists.

We speak to the driven multidisciplinary artist, who works with mediums such as oil painting, sculpture and photography, about the themes she enjoys exploring through her art, her latest photography series, what love means to her and her future goals.

As Arabs, we know the value of water too well. Our ancestors who have lived in arid lands conserved water and treated it as the most precious commodity. We are also driven by strong values to help out those in need and to love our fellow humans as we love ourselves.

One Emirati creative is driven by these strong values, and today, she is utilising her photography skills to raise awareness about issues the world should care about. Noora Al Neyadi is a 31-year-old Emirati photographer time traveller storyteller, as she likes to describe herself.

Towards the end of last year, Al Neyadi travelled to Chad and, more specifically, to The Sahara to help raise awareness about the water issue.

كعرب، نعرف قيمة الماء جيدًا. أسلافنا الذين عاشوا في الأراضي القاحلة حافظوا على المياه وعاملوها على أنها أثمن سلعة. نحن مدفوعون أيضًا بقيم قوية لمساعدة المحتاجين ونحب إخواننا من البشر كما نحب أنفسنا.

هذه القيم القوية هي الدافع وراء إبداعات مصورة إماراتية، وهي تستخدم اليوم مهاراتها في التصوير الفوتوغرافي لرفع مستوى الوعي حول القضايا التي يجب أن يهتم بها العالم. نورة النيادي، مصورة إماراتية تبلغ من العمر 31 عامًا، راوية قصص مسافرة عبر الزمن، كما تحب أن تصف نفسها.

في نهاية العام الماضي، سافرت النيادي إلى تشاد وبشكل أكثر تحديدًا إلى الصحراء للمساعدة في رفع مستوى الوعي حول قضية المياه.

‘About Love: Postcards from Bondi,’ a project led by Australia-based photographer Daniela Rivera Antara, collects stories about love through the eyes of memories and moments that can define an individual and collective experience. ‘I began this work when I thought back on how love has guided and shaped my life,’ says the 26 year old. ‘I wanted to come to terms with my experiences and to learn more from what love is for people other than myself.’

In this set of images by Antara, love comes from the roots that tie Dr Ahmad Al-Dabagh, an Iraq-Australian photographer, creative and the subject of the photographs, to his late grandmother and their native Baghdad, Iraq.

يجمع مشروع "About Love: Postcards from Bondi" المصور المقيم في أستراليا دانييلا ريفيرا أنتارا قصصًا عن الحب من خلال أعين الذكريات واللحظات التي يمكن أن تحدد التجربة الفردية والجماعية. يقول الشاب البالغ من العمر 26 عامًا: "لقد بدأت هذا العمل عندما فكرت مرة أخرى في كيفية توجيه الحب وتشكيل حياتي". ويضيف: "أردت أن أتصالح مع تجاربي وأن أتعلم المزيد مما يعنيه الحب لأشخاص آخرين غير نفسي".

في هذه المجموعة من الصور التي التقطتها أنتارا، ينبع الحب من الجذور التي تربط الدكتور أحمد الدباغ ، المصور العراقي الأسترالي، المبدع وموضوع الصور ، بجدته الراحلة وموطنهم بغداد ، العراق.

In a time where many people document and share everything from beautiful sceneries to a baby’s first steps, this Arab photographer goes against the grain of what is considered new and exciting. Born in the United Arab Emirates, Alia Sultan Al Joker is a young female photographer sharing her appreciation for her culture and heritage in a creative way.

The younger generation, particularly, is guilty of showcasing so much of their lives, yet so little of what truly matters, ‘the most precious resource we have: our elderly people,’ says Al Joker. Although in today’s world the emphasis is on the youth, to Al Joker, documenting the lives of the older generation, and how they adapt to the changes, allows her to illustrate how they are still part of today’s modern world. But most importantly, acts as a reminder that the youth is nothing without the elderly.

‎في الوقت الذي يقوم فيه العديد من الأشخاص بتوثيق ومشاركة كل شيء من المناظر الجميلة إلى الخطوات الأولى للطفل، فإن عمل هذه المصورة العربي يتعارض مع ما يعتبر جديدًا ومثيرًا. ولدت علياء سلطان الجوكر في الإمارات العربية المتحدة، وهي مصورة شابة تشارك تقديرها لثقافتها وتراثها بطريقة إبداعية.

‎"جيل الشباب، على وجه الخصوص، مذنب بعرض الكثير من حياتهم، ولكن القليل جدًا مما يهم حقًا، أثمن مورد لدينا: كبار السن لدينا" ، كما تقول الجوكر. على الرغم من أن التركيز في عالم اليوم ينصب على الشباب، فإن توثيق حياة الأجيال الأكبر سنًا، وكيفية تكيفهم مع التغييرات، يسمح لها بتوضيح كيف أنهم لا يزالون جزءًا من عالم اليوم الحديث. ولكن الأهم من ذلك، أنه بمثابة تذكير بأن الشباب لا شيء بدون كبار السن.

It’s finally here! Your perfect summer read. We are thrilled to unveil our Summer 2023 issue.

Sekka has always been a champion of Arab photographers. In a region witnessing development and growth, we believe that photography is one of the most important tools to share a story. A photograph can capture a moment in time, a feeling, or an emotion in a way that words cannot. It can also be used to document history as we are witnessing it, to raise awareness about important issues, and to inspire others.

In this issue, we feature the work of several Arab photographers who are using their work to document what is happening in their region and who are imagining different narratives using artificial intelligence (AI).

Featuring on our cover is work by none other than Hassan Hajjaj

We are proud to support establishing and emerging photographers from the Arab world in this issue. We believe that these photographers have important stories to tell, and we want to help them share them with the world.

We hope that you enjoy this issue of Sekka. We are proud to feature the work of these talented Arab photographers, and we believe that their work is an important contribution to the world.
