Women make up half of humanity. Apparently, we only made 0.5% of the history worth recording.

I haven’t really stopped thinking about that number since I heard it.

And once you look at women’s sport through that lens, a lot of the conversations we keep having about audiences, relevance and “earning” coverage start to look rather different.

This is why we make GSR. Even the nonsense. Go read the whole Substack on this topic now. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Found these from August 2010 and they stopped me in my tracks a little.

We’d gone to Soccer City with friends to watch the Springboks play the All Blacks in the first rugby Test ever held at the newly rebuilt stadium, just weeks after South Africa had hosted the FIFA World Cup final there.

Nearly 100k people. John Smit was playing his 100th Test. The Boks led 22–17 with three minutes left before New Zealand won 29–22 - AND clinched the Tri-Nations TITLE🥲

If you’d told that girl she’d eventually work at Rugby World Cups, on Lions tours, for the BBC, become a rugby producer and broadcaster, and one day own a rugby show, I genuinely don’t know that she’d have believed you.

Sometimes you don’t realise you’re standing at the beginning of something.

Also, the filters, photo quality & the dark hair. 2010 really was a time. 😂🇿🇦

PSA for everyone heading to FNB on Saturday: your rugby starts at 13:30. 🇿🇦

Before the Springboks and All Blacks go at it at 17:00, the Springbok Women and Black Ferns will play a Test on South African soil for the first time in history.

A rematch of THAT World Cup quarter-final. A Bok Women side that has kept building ever since. And one enormous opportunity to give them the kind of home crowd this occasion deserves.

Best bit? If you have a ticket for the men’s Test, you already have a ticket for this one.

So get in early. Get to your seat. Bring the noise.
