We are sad to announce the passing of Estrellita Karsh, philanthropist and wife of the legendary photographer Yousuf Karsh. She was 95.

Estrellita was a great champion of her husband’s work and passionate about its ongoing legacy. She was a great friend to Camera Press who has represented the Karsh Archive since 1947.

With a particular interest in scientific research, she worked for the distinguished Dr Walter C. Alvarez as his medical editor for a number of years. She combined this with her philanthropy and supported a number of medical establishments; among them the Estrellita and Yousuf Karsh Department of Emergency Medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

She will be remembered with love and gratitude by all at Camera Press.

Say hello to renowned nebula The Pillars of Creation. These towers got their name because they were a stellar nursery—a place where new stars are born. But the key word is “were.” Scientists think a supernova explosion felled the pillars some years ago, but the light from that cataclysm hasn’t reached us yet; what we’re seeing in this photo is about 5,700 years old, since that’s how long it took the nebula’s light to reach the Hubble Space Telescope.
