Yesterday, I attended my daughter’s Information Evening.
We met her pastoral team and listened to an incredible hour-long presentation by the company recently awarded Best UK Coaching Company 2025.

The session was fantastic it felt like we, the parents, were being coached on how to better support our children. Having gone through this journey with my older children, it’s become somewhat normalised for me.

But sitting there yesterday, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own school days back home. Growing up, my parents were never invited for updates or discussions. In fact, in many schools, only the “rich parents” were given that privilege. The rest of us got unsigned memos that never made it home.

Sadly, I don’t think much has changed. For many state-owned schools in Nigeria, parental involvement is still minimal. Meetings are irregular, communication is poor, and parents often remain distant from their children’s academic lives not by choice, but by a system that hasn’t evolved enough to include them.

It made me realise how easy we compare life in the UK with life in Nigeria. The truth is the systems, opportunities, and access are worlds apart.
