This is not an equivalent situation.

Israel invests heavily in protecting its civilians with the Iron Dome, bomb shelters, and other defensive systems.

Hamas has invested heavily in an underground tunnel network and has placed weapons and military infrastructure within civilian areas, putting those living in Gaza in harm’s way.

On October 7, Hamas-led attackers killed about 1,200 people in Israel and took 251 hostages. The war that followed has caused destruction in Gaza.

There is a difference between investing in infrastructure designed to protect civilians and placing military infrastructure among them.

Recognize the difference.

7 Days of Books About October 7: Day 7

For the final day, here are the books I’ve either read or am currently reading about October 7.

Some are firsthand accounts. Some explore what it means to process life after October 7. And some help us understand how this attack was able to happen. Each is an important documentation of October 7 and a way to continue processing this tragedy.

Books about October 7 featured in this series:

✡️ On Being Jewish Now edited by Zibby Owens Zibby Owens
🪦 When We See You Again by Rachel Goldberg-Polin rachelgoldbergpolin
🎗️ Hostage by Eli Sharabi אלי שרעבי
🇮🇱 10/7: 100 Human Stories by Lee Yaron Lee Yaron Eini
✡️ The Gates of Gaza by Amir Tibon Amir Tibon
📓 While Israel Slept by Yaakov Katz Yaakov Katz and Amir Bohbot אמיר בוחבוט amir bohbot

May the memories of those we lost three years ago be a blessing. May we continue to pray for everyone directly and indirectly affected by the October 7 attacks.

Am Israel Chai 💙✡️

Actually, many of us care.

While the world has confused Hamas terrorists with “freedom fighters,” Jewish people are still carrying the pain of October 7. We remember the lives stolen from us that day, the trauma experienced by the Israeli hostages held in Gaza, and the families who waited to find out if their loved ones would ever come home.

We care about the deadliest attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust.

We remember October 7 because these were real people, real families, and real lives forever changed.

And you should care, too. Because this is an evil that needs to be called out.

Am Israel Chai. 💙✡️

I’m not spreading Israeli propaganda. I’m supporting the only Jewish state in the world.

No, I haven’t seen Gaza recently. I’m Jewish, and I have no desire to end up in a Hamas tunnel.

But that’s not really what this comment is referencing, is it? Perhaps you’re referring to images showing the destruction from the war in Gaza following Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel.

So how does supporting Israel benefit me?

Israel matters to me, my children, my children’s children, and Jewish people around the world. My family knows what a world without a Jewish state looked like. Members of my family were killed in pogroms and the Holocaust.

Today, Jewish people have somewhere to go and a country with an army to protect them.

That is why supporting Israel matters to me.

7 Days of Books About October 7: Day 6

While Israel Slept by Yaakov Katz and אמיר בוחבוט amir bohbot is a book I’m currently reading that investigates how Israel was caught so unprepared for the October 7 attack and examines the intelligence, military, and political failures that preceded it.

It’s important to consider not only what happened on October 7, but how it was able to happen. In a world full of conspiracy theories, I appreciate these journalists taking the time to investigate what went wrong, how these failures happened, and what can be learned from them.

Understanding October 7 also means being willing to ask difficult questions and examine what went wrong.

You must be real fun at dinner parties. 😂

Do you feel better now that you bullied a random stranger on the internet over a video of her eating shakshuka?

Got this comment on the clock app on a video of me trying shakshuka at The Nosh of Beverly Hills .

Body shaming strangers online isn’t funny or clever. Meanwhile, I’m just going to keep sharing Jewish food, trying new restaurants, and sharing Jewish joy. 💙✡️

Which recipe should I make first?

Between Chapters Book Launch at Zibby’s Bookshop in Santa Monica 📚💙

What a wonderful evening celebrating Between Chapters by Zibby Owens at Zibby’s Bookshop in Santa Monica!

I loved hearing Zibby chat with Annabeth Gish about the book, how we can’t have it all in life, the reality of being a working mom, and more. It was an incredible conversation and such a fun night meeting other readers and book lovers in Los Angeles.

Zibby also welcomed the Friends of the Palisades Library to the event, giving us an opportunity to support their efforts to rebuild. ❤️

If you love book launches, author events, and literary events in Los Angeles, keep an eye on what’s happening at Zibby’s Bookshop. I already can’t wait to go back!

And if you haven’t grabbed Between Chapters yet, pick up a copy for yourself and a friend. 📖

7 Days of Books About October 7: Day 5 📚🇮🇱

10/7: 100 Human Stories by Lee Yaron Eini is a book I’m slowly making my way through.

Published in 2024, Lee set out to sit shiva for those who lost their lives on October 7, 2023 by recording their names and telling their individual stories. Behind every number is a person, a family, a life, and a story worth remembering.

It’s a difficult read, but an important one as we remember all that was lost when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7.

May their memories be a blessing. 🕯️

“Pain comes with purpose.” — Zibby Owens 💙📚

At the launch party for her new book, Between Chapters, Annabeth Gish asked Zibby Owens an important question: How does she handle negative feedback?

Her answer felt almost countercultural.

As women, we’re sometimes told we need to be less emotional, as though feeling deeply is a hindrance to our success. But Zibby flips that idea. Our emotions aren’t necessarily a weakness. They can be powerful because they allow us to empathize deeply with other people.

Maybe the goal isn’t to feel less. Maybe it’s learning what to do with everything we feel. 💙

Between Chapters by Zibby Owens is out now.
